Some observations from the show: Walthers announced that they'll be doing the SD70ACe in their Mainline. Wow, there will be plenty of choices on the SD70ACe. What's the running total right now: Athearn Bachmann MTH OMI Walthers Lots of options from most budget friendly to most expensive. And still no SDP40F, U33B, U36B, C32-8, SD39, SD18, U30CG, P30CH, DD35, Baldwin Passenger Sharks or Centercabs, any Lima diesels, PRR/NYC/NH/GN/CMSP&P Boxcab Electrics, steeplecabs/E44's or Ingalls 4S. Might as well do another F7. Hrumph!

The problem with those is they don't get you that sweet, sweet heritage unit business. Well, maybe the SD39.

Did any of those who were at the show happen to ask Athearn if CN chop nose GP9RMs were in the plans?

I'm hoping to get all the announcements from Amherst wrapped into one thread.
Here is what I've seen so far:
Athearn -- GP7/GP9 Family (Technically revealed on their page Facebook a couple of days ahead of Amherst)
Rapido -- RDC
Tangent -- X58 Class Box Car.
Everyone feel free to add to the list if I'm missing stuff. Luckily this year seems pretty quiet in general and for my personal modeling tastes. My wallet needs a breather anyway, it's been putting out more than a prostitute at a political convention. The Tangent X-58 is beautiful. Of course I forgot to get back to them to snatch-up a Penn Central. I did however, grab a lone Green Celotex 3 dome & 2 of their awesome acid cars. Thanks David! FL9 - Once again, Rapido has raised the bar on locomotive modeling. The RDC model is going to be just as insane. They buried the motor in the floor so these units can have a full interior. NH 8600 cars will be coming early next year. Athearn - GP7 with train lighting boxes on the long hood - This means the B&M Passenger geeps are not far behind. The Pennsy & UP GP9Bs looked great! BLI - Showing-off the I-4 Steam Locomotive - stunning model. Exactrail - Had to snatch-up one of the Big John hoppers for the collection. Amazing at how large this hopper really is. Spring Mills Depot - snatched-up 20 storage boxes. Also grabbed a B&O Wagon top caboose & a Penn Central Flexi-flo hopper. Well, all I can say is that I am now officially broke! Great show as usual. Thanks to everyone I met & schmoozed with.

Any word from TCS on when they'll have the diesel WOW sound available? Yes, they had the diesel Wow sound showing, and Yankee Dabbler was selling the Wow decoders for $75 for the straight sound and $85 for the sound with keep alive. They are not board style at this time. Several prime mover sounds are loaded on one decoder, and the TCS rep told me that would be what they will do, creating a kind of "family" of prime movers (i.e. all EMD's) on one decoder to choose from as more EMD sopunds become available. They sound very good/excellent. They had an EMD F-unit hauling a boxcar with what appeared to be a 4x4 inch speaker, so it naturally sounded great. I had him start up an Athearn SD 40 and it sounded excellent. I believe they are offering something in the range of 23 airhorns (!), and some realistic dynamic braking features tied to application of dynamic brakes, both for the speed of the engine and the sound coinciding. Currently they are only offering EMD sounds, and any decoders purchased now have all the following prime movers loaded: EMD 567, 567 turbocharged, 645 turbocharged, and 710. Not sure of the 710 variety as it's not really much in my era. They are working on more sounds to load as noted above. They have a speaker which they will also be releasing sometime in March. GE sounds are next up. Alco is a ways off. And that's what I have to say about that.......

Two top Athearn people told me that the Genesis Delaware & Hudson GP38-2's announced end of last December / start of this month won't all be painted like the only illustration on the .pdf page (D&H 7303 with yellow roadname as painted by CP in Calgary in the 1990's). The others will all have somewhat different lightning stripe liveries, all with blue roadnames. The 7312 will have Bernie O'Brien's name on it, the 7322 will have a big number above the roadname on the long hood, etc., etc. VERY welcome news for D&H fans.
No handouts from Rapido re the RDC's. See their newsletter posted at their newsletter. The first run will all be of the later style, like most Canadian RDC's. More details coming shortly.
No new catalogs from Bachman, BLI or MTH. I told Ken Silvestri of BLI that I'm sure my granddaughter will like the mooing from within the stockcar I've bought; he said a lot of people do.

Other news picked up at the West Springfield show:
Lee English wasn't at the Bowser table when I was there; I spoke to a somewhat younger man named Scott and asked whether the firm would be making HO RS-3's. He said it would, and that the first type to be made will be Phase 3. He doesn't expect it to be ready any sooner than a year and a half.
I asked someone at InterMountain what the notation on the most recently announced run of HO "alternate standard" offset twin hoppers that the Erie ones would have "no end angles" meant. He pointed out that in the earlier run the two center end angle extend all the way to the thin horizontal element at the top of the ends. On the new run those angles will end at the bottom of the vertical flat sheet. The Erie had both types.
Dave Lehlbach (Tangent Scale Models) said that there will have to be some new tooling done to make correct Delaware & Hudson PS-2CD 4750 covered hoppers; I hadn't realized that. I'd known for a long time that the same would be true for D&H gons otherwise like the ACF gondolas the firm has made. (The D&H cars were actually built by Pullman-Standard before it developed its on PS-3 [?] gondolas.)
The man at Spring Creek Depot said that their HO B&O wagontop covered hopper should be available by the end of this year and their B&O (and GM&O) wood caboose should be ready months before that.
I didn't see True Line Trains listed among the distributors at all.

Thank you for the Spring Mills Depot update! Waiting patiently for my prepaid I5-s. Will never prepay for anything else, however. The extra $5 off is not worth the risk of late or never delivery.
As for Truelinetrains, there was something on their website about personal matters. Hopefully whatever they are gets resolved. If not, maybe Jason or someone could do their promised FM's and NYC cabeese.

Question, when do the major train manufacturers release their announcements for the holidays? If not at Amherst, is it someplace like the Nuremberg Train Fair or is it just a bunch of announcements throughout the course of the year?

The NMRA National Show gets some, Trainfest gets others, big regional shows like Amherst and Oklahoma City get others. It seems that lead times drive the bus more than the holidays. Manufacturers can also use the net a lot more-so it depends on the product. Dave Burman

Well thanks to the impeding "Blizzard" My train show videos will be delayed. I am heading into work for 4pm Monday and will not be home until MAYBE Wednesday since the city was initially said to be in the highest impact zone, however that changes with every channel and with every news hour. I am not even at the station and I was ordered in for day shift tomorrow and was told that I will more than likely be there Tuesday night and perhaps Wednesday day. So I am sure I will have a busy 48 hours and will not be able to download, edit and upload the videos until Wednesday or Thursday night at the earliest. However I do have a bunch of great video of the weekend. It is funny that while we were up there in Springfield we were hit with 5-6inches and on Saturday night the news was talking about a possible blizzard for Monday! Well I am heading out to deal with 21-28" of snow. Have fun all, be safe!
P.S. Don't be cheap, you have money, spend it! Seriously. Pay some eager 14yr old kid coming to your door trying to get paid to shovel out your sidewalk and driveways! Spend the money or pay for it with your back or worst, heart attack and then you are done. So many older WELL OFF men die during/after every large snow storm by holding onto their wallets to save $25 and instead they try to shovel out their "mansions" or large driveways/sidewalks then they end up having heart attacks and dying.

If not at Amherst, is it someplace like the Nuremberg Train Fair or is it just a bunch of announcements throughout the course of the year? I've talked to several manufacturers about this subject and there is no set train show or place. Many manufacturers will only wait for an announcement if a major show is coming soon. If it's more than a couple of months off, they just make the announcement through regular monthly announcement channels. From when a company decides they're going to make a model, the research&development, molds are made (if applicable), designs are rendered, etc...there is no way they can pre plan for a certain date or time. So they're not losing money or hype from pre orders, they often won't wait until a show unless the show is close. Even then, considering all the manufacturers only Athearn, and a few others actually make a big deal out of an announcement.

And it depends on the manufacturer. Athearn and MTH are a long long time coming from announcements to availability. Even the latest Rapido RDC is next year availability. Exactrail is quicker. Tangent even more so. So they come as they come. And then hopefully later so do the real products.

Yes, I've been watching the weather - apparently Delta has cancelled 600 flights in the northeast - so far it looks like northern Virginia isn't expecting much being on the very fringe of that big blizzard. All too true what you say about shoveling snow and injuries and deaths. There has been some reports on the weather channel discussing the physiology of snow shoveling and why its so dangerous to do. I used to live in central NY and can attest, it's exhausting - and had fun in 2009/2010 when we got hit with a 2 foot and a month later 30 inches. Where I live we get plowed but we still have a minor amount of clearing to do around our cars and sidewalks.

There are kids nowadays working to shovel snow? Most people would never hire them out of liability in this era of litigation. Well off people either go buy a big machine or hire a company to do it.

Amherst has been lame in recent years. Nothing exciting was announced and attendance was down. Some normal vendors didn't even show. Don't waste your time next year.

The last time we've had snow in my neighborhood the only kid wanting to shovel showed up at my front door about an hour after I had shoveled the back driveway and front walk... Apparently he didn't even notice I had already done it. It had been 2" of snow, it took me all of 15 minutes to do it, and he wanted $40 not even noticing it had already been done.

I used to make a killing as a kid when it snowed. Charged $10 no matter what, usually got $15 or 20 for a good job. I had people calling my parents to find out if i was coming around. Now, so glad I live in an apartment and dont have to worry about shovelig. lol
as for hiring kids these days, do kids even want to work? I just found out someone that i dealt with at contract negotiations may have passed away from a heart attack today from shoveling.

Worked the show both days. Saturday the weather was not bad at all, but some people driving clearly forgot how. A good number of crashes, due to stupidity. Wet snow can be slick, snow tires, and thoughtful driving make a huge difference, and today should kick them back to reality. Managed to get a few pics: www.pbase.com/tom_murray/ars_show_2015Note Athearn's new CNW chop-job, HEP geeps and Rapido's new Railcrew goodies which seem to have been under-reported. Okay, Saturday the attendance was way down, the diehards were still there and shopping. Saw my usuals and some new people, but all were typically happy they braved the elements. Sunday we had families and some parents introducing their kids to the hobby. It's something that I enjoy seeing as I've reached my fourth decade and I remember it well. All in all, another year sacked away. Some new layouts and a few good finds, all worth it. Spoke to a few vendors and checkout the new goodies that were visible including Intermountain's GP10, which I didn't get a picture, that was in focus, of....eh. It's on par with their SD40-2 which does look worse in person; sad because I love their rolling stock...oh well. The Rapido F40 and FL-9 look better in person than the pictures, as they're incredibly impressive. Conversely, the TCS sound decoders are not. They're very focused on horns and back EMF automatically notching the prime mover, but not the actual prime mover sounds. The recordings appear okay, but there was no actual internal speaker to hear what the real sound delivery is. They were using an external, amplified speaker which still just made the recordings sound okay... In my view, they have a long way to go; it's no ESU. As for the: "nothing exciting announced," this is entirely subjective. While I agree nothing new that interest me that much was announced, it's interesting to some and that's what drives the hobby/industry. I met one of the best friends that I have at this show one year and I couldn't care less what was announced that year. There's more than just new product and I like getting ideas just as much as I like find out about new products. From my perspective: Nobody is going to announce an SPV-2000 at a Rapido/Genesis level... well, humph. Maybe by the time I'm 75 I'll get lucky.

If there isn't a snow shoveling app it ain't happening today. You would be sued for abuse if you hire or let your kid be hired to shovel snow. Heck in Maryland parents are in deep stuff for letting their kids walk home. It is probably a felony to hire a 13 year old to shovel snow.

Some observations from the show: Walthers announced that they'll be doing the SD70ACe in their Mainline. For some reason, I'm intrigued by the possible Mainline SD70ACe. I know it won't be as detailed as either the Genesis or MTH ACe's, but I have been itching to do another "old fashioned" detailing project. Hopefully, they won't take the same shortcut as Bachmann did and include molded-on grab-irons.

A ways back someone asked about Spring Mills Depot. I asked the guy at the table about their future projects but he wouldn't say. Then I asked if they would consider doing the Norfolk and Western CF caboose. First he said yes, then said if I would supply all the info needed, so the N&W CF caboose is not likely to be one of their two up coming cars.
