How about doing rotating bearing caps on stuff? It can be done, just sayin. Those converted trucks would be cool with that. Even on locos that had the friction bearings converted or cut off.

Showed the photo to my wife she says they are back in style so I see you are keeping up with the latest retro styles! thanks I bought my first pair of bellbottoms in 1990, and I've been wearing them ever since. It's fascinating seeing how acceptance has changed in 30 years. When I would ride the streetcar in bellbottoms in the early 1990s, people would actually point and laugh. Now nobody bats an eye. We as a people have become more tolerant of people expressing themselves in unique ways. Being the neo-maxi zoom dweebie that I am, I appreciate that. -Jason

Oh, well, I've learnt a fair amount about producing compound curves and springs <iframe width="17" height="8.120000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 17px; height: 8.120000000000005px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 309px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_46250036" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17" height="8.120000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 17px; height: 8.12px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 787px; top: 309px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_73219455" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17" height="8.120000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 17px; height: 8.12px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 655px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_21917008" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="17" height="8.120000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 17px; height: 8.12px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 787px; top: 655px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_52397752" scrolling="no"></iframe>

When I've gone shopping for jeans during the past 30 years, I don't recall even seeing bell bottoms for sale, especially in the 1990's, and I've bounced around between Houston TX, Bloomington IN, Rochester NY, Syracuse NY and the national capitol region. But it's hard not to notice that some fashion trends sometimes recycle. As teen it was pretty normal to wear flares and bell bottoms until they went out of fashion by around 1976 or so and they were no longer sold in the stores, so even if you did want them, they were basically not sold anymore. Probably for the past 10-15 years I've been living in cave as far as fashion trends go so was surprised when my wife told me bell bottoms were making a comeback. Perhaps Canada was way way ahead here if you could buy them in the early 1990's. Cheers, Jim

When were the friction bearing trucks that were retrofitted with roller bearings outlawed for interchange?

Any chance for a roller bearing retrofit caboose trucks?
Also curious about the hiring spots. I think I could do either, but I’d like to know more (please no giant bugs) before I decide to move 1500 miles to another country.

When were the friction bearing trucks that were retrofitted with roller bearings outlawed for interchange? I'm not finding any evidence that the conversions are illegal. Friction bearings in interchange were outlawed January 1, 1994. I think it was about 1980 when new cars couldn't be built with friction. What could be happening is that the retrofitted trucks are aging out, probably with the cars on top of them. Thus you could still install new trucks made up of the same castings as the old friction bearing ones, but converted to roller bearings. They'd probably cost more, if you could find them. I did find some talk about hot box detectors perhaps having trouble with the conversion type trucks. If this is true, that could explain why they're outlawed. But, as I said, I couldn't find anything saying they were. Perhaps someone else will. Ed

That was when "vintage" meant 1950s-1970s. Now "vintage" means last Tuesday. Today I get them all brand new from the UK. There are a couple of brands that are actually made in the UK. Usually they fit fine. But occasionally I order a dud. A pair of green cords arrived last week that were clearly designed to show off most of my underwear. I've emailed the store asking for something G rated. -Jason

When were the friction bearing trucks that were retrofitted with roller bearings outlawed for interchange? I'm not finding any evidence that the conversions are illegal. Solid bearing trucks converted to roller bearings were banned from interchange as of 01/01/1995, although I think that is an AAR prohibition and not based on regulation. See AAR Rule 90 Section B5 linked from here www.csx.com/index.cfm/customers/safety-and-security/regulations-and-policies/tank-cars/?mobileFormat=true (this portion of the CSX site is about tank cars but the rule would be the same for others).

Bell bottoms? Ewwwwwww... those things sucked in the '70s and they still suck ! I was a teen in the late '70s and at the time wouldn't have been caught dead in them. Oh yea, and I absolutely DESPISED disco LOL!!! BTW, I was down at Rob's Trains in Alliance, OH a while back and bought a couple pair of those fantastic trucks... and I didn't and still don't have a project in mind for either pair, I just thought they were that cool! I'll find something to use them on one of these days!

And as intimated above, it's because the journal box shields the roller bearing from the hot box detectors. As explained to me by a signal maintainer, the detectors don't necessarily look at actual temperature, but rather a temp out of range according to the rest of the train. That's how you can go over a detector with the brakes set and not get a sticking brake alarm. With bearings, the shielding provided by the old journal box would prevent detecting the bearing temp being out of range until it was well into failure. Oftentimes we would set out a car/axle that tripped two detectors in row while not being terribly hot. It would be warmer than the others however.

I would imagine so, being that everything going forward will be 5.0. 4.0 and Selects have been discontinued.
