All too often I buy trains cause they are "shiny" but end up selling cause they don't fit for reason x or y. Anything with 3 panel COTS is out as too late. Maybe the Penn Central ones got around by the late 70's in early Conrail era?

When a car is announced I'm interested in, I look here: www.rrpicturearchives.net/railroadList.aspxfreight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/search.plwww.railcarphotos.com/Search.phpwww.rr-fallenflags.org/You can lookup by reporting mark and then number series (except the last one). If I find the car in the era I model, I consider ordering the car. Because you get dates and locations, that helps your issue, Jim. I used to ask but but every time a car comes out and then asking, people used to get annoyed and still do. So I learned where to look on my own. The systems works and I can check a group of car announcements in less than 30 minutes. Even less time if the car is a single model, like this one.

Helpful people answer, those who aren't chastise. Thanks. Which is the nice thing about a Forum -- you can get "tribal knowledge" and firsthand observations that go beyond the online sources. Useful as they are, some are undated or carry the date they were posted, which in many instances is clearly not the date the shot was taken.

Assuming it's for your Rio Grande trains, photos of the cars west of Denver seem to apply. Most photos have location info. And this is a helpful answer. Future searches will see my post and learn of 4 websites they can search for cars at knowing they can find dates and locations, taking things with a grain of salt, as The Ferro Kid suggests. Which is the nice thing about a Forum -- you can get "tribal knowledge" and firsthand observations that go beyond the online sources. This is why I ask, and sometimes get usful information. So it's worth the risk. Ok good point about the references. I find RailCarPhoto's and RR-fallen flags to be the easiest for me to use. The archives site is very slow and laggy and tends to have fewer older photo's. I took a spin back through that old topic. Someone mentioned a photo on the WP but not sure which scheme. I'm mainly interested in this first run since we are talking about pre-orders. There was a patched Penn Central in 1991 out west so my guess that PC versions may be best for me from the 1st run.

Preordered two; thanks for the heads up on the price!
Jim:
I see your point about not having a “knee jerk” reaction to buy into every preorder that hits the market. However, I think these cars have a cool factor that is just too hard to resist. Like you, I won’t buy cars that don’t fit my era. However, the more I research and look at photos, the more I’m surprised at the diversity of cars and locomotives that passed through my home town.
Thanks, Mark

And failing that, an easy 15 minutes of digging over at the MFCL will answer most questions like these a solid 85 or 90 percent of the time. Unfortunately sometimes folks want somebody else to do their homework. And if they don't trust the screen name next to it, they ask again.

Here's a dumb question. MFCL? Modern Freight Car List. It was formerly a Yahoo Group but got recently moved to groups.io when the spam became a problem. Most of your heavy hitters in freight car knowledge reside there. Jim Eager, Dick Dawson, Scott Chatfield, etc.

Does anyone know when Conrail moved them to MDTX? Best I can do is between July 1991 and April 1995, based on ORER information. Ed

Aw, were the plain SHPX ones canceled? WERE there plain SHPX ones? From what I can see, there were 7 SHPX cars produced in '64-'65. They were changed to ACFX starting early 1968. If the Rapido SHPX picture shows an as-delivered car, it seems unlikely there would have been plain SHPX cars in only 5 years. Are you confusing SHPX with SYSX? The latter were plain, and are offered by Rapido. Ed

The pre-announcement artwork showed a plain SHPX, but also no FMC, so I guess plans changed. The FMC ones do look pretty cool, though I was hoping I could go with a basic scheme on such a unique car, so as not to draw too much attention. Maybe a kit?

Yeah, the ACFX car got my attention, too. And I thought of getting a kit to do one.
Then I thought of the 38 lifetimes of projects I already have.
I'll prob'ly get just a SYSX.
