I recently saw a Walthers undec GP15-1 on eBay that has metal handrails all done up. A few questions- 1) who makes good stanchions these days? 2) what glue is good to attach the wire rails? 3) can paint still be applied well with the handrails on if done right? This would apply to any diesel. Thanks in advanceā¦

Not sure who is still making the stanchions anymore, but historically Smokey Valley had nice kits. I've used those and even the plain steel sets that came with Athearn blue box. Use CA to install. If you can airbrush or spray the stanchions prior to installation, that's always the best finish but I have successfully brush painted them with lacquer paints.

1. Nobody. But if you must have some, the old PIA then Precision Scale and now the new owner of Precision Scale. They are a bit to short in height though. Not just a little either. 2. Solder or if you must. Capillary action thin CA into the top of the stanchion after you get them all properly vertical. 3. Yes.

These are the KV Models stanchions. The C channel is a little shallow due to being a photo etched part, and the mounting pins could be a little longer, but overall I'm happy with them. These were glue to the handrails with thin CA using capillary action, like Brian suggested.

John, Very nice job on the stanchions and handrails. I will have to give the KV Models stanchions a go. Glenn

Wow did you have to bend the handrails yourself or does KV offer them pre-bent?

Who makes the Uncoupling Lever? It looks fantastic as well Good question. It's been a while since I built that. I THINK I reshaped a Detail Associates cut bar.

How does one fold the tab around the wire so well? I tired a smokey mountain handrail kit about 16 years ago and failed miserably, I ruined a majority of the tabs and had to throw it all out. Although those KV models phosphor bronze tabs sound easier to fold over the wire.
