This will have two body styles. I think the Boston & Maine cars the Insider Mailing List email mentions I still see today on the Fort Worth VR cam.
They also announced a CNCF 5000 boxcar, which is a Mexican built modern 50' ribbed side boxcar.

Portec, now that's a name I've not heard in a long time

I don't recall ever seeing the name Portec before, but the B&M apparently had a lot of the type Atlas's own Insider Information gmail sent at 4:59 p.m. EDT today (Aug. 12) calls Body. Style 1, with the four hatches in the middle of the roof spaced farther apart than in the photo posted at the top of this thread. On rr-falllenflags.org I saw photos of cars numbered from BM 5200 all they way up to. 5299. I certainly hope to get one of these when they're available. It'll make cutting down a longer car unnecessary.
The ones I've seen, mostly in Ayer, Shirley and a little farther west on the Fitchburg Route have been, if not recently repainted, heavily weathered, probably in cement service. Some of the photos at George Elwood's great website, cited in the first paragraph, were taken in upstate New York and Ontario and Indiana. A few vertical yellow conspicuity cars were added to some cars, apparently in 2008-2009.

The B&M ones are now patched for AEQX, they’re fairly common in the northeast still.

The only thing I knew about Portec was that they built autoracks and they purchased Paragon who's racks the Accurail now Walthers autoracks represent.

Looks like the B&M/G/Pan Am sold off cars in 2012; they became AMIX 3000-3044 and still run as AEQX 3000-3044. Maybe 44 were all that was left of them.

I would definitely like to get a B&M car, patch it to AEQX and weather the crap out of it. I see those cars mixed into sand trains somewhat regularly, and while they don't look so hot these days, they are still VERY cool.

I worked for Pan Am after they had gotten rid of them, but heard plenty of horror stories about the cars, apparently the handbrakes didn’t work very good on them.

Where was Portec's car building facility located?

Yes, the Portec Rotary Dumps for SCPS are rather seggsy! Could certainly use them in HO, especially those who model the Clinchfield (OG) or as CSX.

Where was Portec's car building facility located? They had one facility in Winder, GA, which is along the SAL's Abbeyville Sub.

The 1980 Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia has a basic line drawing for the car. Some of the stuff in that book is hit-or-miss in terms of drawing quality, but knowing the basic dimensions coupled with a good set of prototype photos, a decently detailed model could be put together. After the Trough Train, I feel like I have the technical knowledge to pull a 3D printed model off, the hard part is curating the documentation and other resources. They aren't a car that I would use on my railroad, but they are an interesting prototype. If I had the time and modeling resources, it would be a project I may consider developing.

Hate to bump an old thread but per Atlas' production schedule page, these are on their way as of November 13th. Typically 60 days from that date to being shipped to distributors and dealers, means they likely will hit just in time for the big Amherst show. A run of GP38s announced Jan 22 and the mobile office containers from January this year are coming with them.

Dec. 6, about 5 p.m., EST
lvrr325, thanks very much for the update. I wasn't able to get either to any of the layouts on the Mass./N.H. Tour de Chooch or to the Hub Division show in Marlborough, MA because of things I needed to do at home and/or with my family. I'm still hoping to get to the big West Springfield, Mass. show for at least a few hours on Jan. 27 or 28. And I do want to get one of Atlas's HO version of the Portec-built hoppers that the B&M got, though the real railoaders had good reasons not to like them, having to do with their hand brakes.

Keeps all the discussion about a particular product in one place.

Do they still list at ~$80? They used to run in cuts of 5 or so near the head end of CP freights in the era I'm interested in.

Actually I may be wrong. I got an Atlas Insider email of course after I posted that which claims they expect them around Dec. 10th.
But I tend to think from past experience that's too optimistic. The container went out Nov. 15th and I've never seen stuff show in just 30 days. Usually takes most of 30 to get from there to port here in the US, then has to clear customs, get off the dock, and freight to Atlas in New Jersey. Six weeks might be the fastest I remember. Which would still be after Christmas. Even the previous container which went out in October that they expect this week, it's a tad over six weeks on. (HO standard cupola cabooses, NE-6 cabooses, 2nd round Slab Side hoppers).
As far as I know the price hasn't changed. My guess is street price $55-$65. I did not pre-order any but I notice previous rounds of items not moving very fast so possible I can snag some when they show.

Yes, my pusher, HO Hobbies has them for $58.10 which I thought was acceptable enough to order one. You're also right about stock not moving so fast at the moment. My take is that manufacturers were slow to dial back production in response to the downturn in hobby spending following the bubble during the pandemic.

Some of this stuff is just too expensive for what it is. Some of it, probably shouldn't have been run at all. I've had a couple of Atlas engines just about a full year now, no sale even running them for basically my cost on ebay for weeks.
Other stuff has sold through fine, most Bowser RS3s, some of their cars, the Rapido Northeastern caboose, etc.

Are these not the Alusuisse/Portec Algola hoppers? Yes, those are the same cars built for Santee Cooper / SCWX that ran across the Clinchfield and CSX into the early 2000's.

Finally, we get NW HC-77's!!! I was only aware of these cars from the Shellscale decals pkg. Think they are neat cars! Looking at pics today. Most recent picture I could find was 2019, so they can work for my time frame. Most pics were from, VA,NC,PA,IL,IN and a few from WI. Unfortunately nowhere near my modeling area. I plan to model a Cement transload, so if Atlas does them I NS, I'll probably pick up a couple and add to the pool of cement hoppers.
