1/5/2024, about 9:35 p.m., EST
Having just a few minutes ago being alerted by a helpful post on this forum that Atlas now has its long-awaited Portec covered hoppers, and having, with some difficulty, ordered one from Atlas, since I still don't know whether I'll be able to get to the big show in West Springfield, Mass., on January 27 or 28, I'm in no position to buy a locomotive.
However, I'm surprised not to have noticed any mention on this thread of the D&RGW's Krauss-Maffei locos of the type Piko is producing in Southern Pacific's livery. Some of us do like the D&RGW more than the SP.

My KM arrived today, kudos to USPS for quick trip from Brooklyn to mid Michigan, beating their own ETA. The model looks gorgeous in the box I'll need instructions on opening . Mention of a different type decoder than I have any experience with, PluX 22. Have plenty of other projects to work on before I get into it. I did see mention of traction tires in the parts list that are in the box you can remove from the big box without ripping that open. I'm not going to open it at this time. Truth is, had they called me to ask if I still wanted it I'd have declined it. I keep waiting for the BLI Cryo cars due any day since ~Thanksgiving... Sorry no pix. Since Photobucket's latest bs I no longer have linkable access. Have a flickr I've not looked into just how it works yet.

Mention of a different type decoder than I have any experience with, PluX 22. That's a European spec decoder. ESU, Bachman Europe, Zemo, Märklin, Lenz, and others make them. They require a 22-pin socket and have commands for Märklin and Zemo controls as well as common DCC controls. They meet both NEM and NMRA specs. Google will find suppliers in the US of A.

Hi,
They can move quickly. The only pitty is that their decoder are an home build solution which is a pain to setup without their expensive programmer.

The Lokprogrammer is among the cheapest of the brands that are available. Lenz and Zimo are both priced higher. The ESU Loksound decoders are almost infinitely programmable with the Lokprogrammer and is a good investment to make for your time if your fleet is primarily ESU decoders of which mine is.
I don't know what you mean by a 'home build' solution. Can you clarify?

Hi, Piko decoders are developed by Piko self. Hence home build. They sound oke but are very hard to program with JMRI because of the lack of definitions.

I thought PIKO used D&H or Uhlenbrock decoders. I know at least one of my PIKO locomotives has a Uhlenbrock installed according to the manufacturer code readout.

As most manufacturers they went through several decodermanufactorers for their engines.

Anyone heard when the sound versions will be out? On February 9th, Piko America posted (on Facebook) that "the DCC/Sound KM locos have just arrived! They will be shipping out next week to retailers across America." Bill McBride

What are your opinions on this Piko locomotive? Was it worth the money? Is the detail acceptable? Does it run well?
I have always found Piko to deliver more for your money than the other Euro manufacturers.

I happened to see one up close at a recent Seattle area swap meet, Mr. Robert Zenk had it for show only that day - Beautiful model, I'm very interested in now that I've seen it, as I understand they will be doing several specific variations for both SP and Rio Grande.

They are very well done, the detailing is good, and it runs very smoothly. Pressing Fn8, starts the first engine, pressing Fn8 a second time starts the second engine, third time shuts both engines down.

In the photo's the SP KM's look very nice. My early cut-off for D&RGW for years has been 1965 (to squeeze in the F3's), but I am tempted when the D&RGW KM's come out.

I have always found Piko to deliver more for your money than the other Euro manufacturers. This is the finest locomotive I have ever owned and that includes, Genesis, Bowser, Atlas, Rapido, BLI, Walthers Proto going back 40 years. The paint and details are flawless (I own two - 1 sound and 1 DCC-ready). It's hard to explain but the scarlet and grey just "pops." The grabs etc are to scale and beautifully installed. The lighting package is excellent and the number boards are magnificent. The cab interior is nicely done and the engine room lighting is a fun addition. They run quietly and smoothly and the sound is as fine as I have ever heard. I am waiting for a DRGW unit. If they were not going to be produced, I would buy a third SP. These engines are THAT good! Who has the best prices on the SP units? Is another run coming soon?

Piko has always delivered for me. Good to hear something positive about a German manufacturer on this side of the Atlantic. I think many German and Austrian manufacturers are a bit of a step above what is produced here, but no one knows that unless you are modeling European. They are usually fanatical about detail and accuracy, though there have been some slip ups in the past.

I see Lombard Hobbies has a few sound units in stock.
When I contacted them a while ago to preorder they said they were not going to carry Piko. I see the popularity and quality of the K-Ms must have changed their position.

After 3+ pages in this thread has anyone here tested or photographed theirs? Mine is still in the box with other things taking up my hobby time. I’m not ready to take the hit for a decoder or opening it up to install one.

For those that got this locomotive with the sound decoder, does F0 turn on the headlight? So far I can not get any of the lights to come on.

Thanks for the video, looks like none of the lights work. Any sound or motion? Perhaps the decoder is not fully seated? I recently had a Genesis unit like that. Bill McBride

I have horn, bell, engine startup, (both engines in fact), will move as well. If I had to guess, it would be an issue with the common. I have an email into PIKO-America, I'll see if they have any suggestions.
