nothing on their website yet, but they have a sign up at their booth at the Amherst show. Two classes - mid production with low profile standard fans and chicken wire rads, and late production with Q-Fans and standard rads. Dynamic and Non Dynamic in both mid and late versions. Several different paint schemes and 15 different road numbers available across all versions being made. Lit class lights, step lights, ground lights, rear ditch lights on applicable units. Not mentioned but probably lit number boards too. This is a HUGE announcement for CN modelers, the Intermountain model can finally be put out to pasture where it belongs.

Glad to hear this, as you indicated, I too was very disappointed with the Intermountain units.

Intermountain makes good rolling stock and wheels with this announcement and Scaletrains Intermountain locos will no longer run on my layout.

Fantastic news! I’ve always liked the look of those cabs and am glad to see Bowser continue to expand their niche as the GMD diesel experts. I’ll have to get one of each version.

Well, at least there was ONE announcement of additional SD40-2's from a manufacturer this weekend. I don't need one, but one would look good with an Athearn CN 9-44CWL that I have.

I am overjoyed that Bowser will be making these. Their SD40-2s are some of the nicest HO diesels available!

Home run Bowser! At least we can get SD40-2’s from them over time. These should be a great seller for them, and anyone who has one of the Intermountain models can finally just toss that “thing” in the garbage. John

That's exciting news!
It will be interesting to see how they do the ditch lights on these given that they are not pilot-mounted like the standard cab CP version. I recall the weak ditch light tube system on the Intermountain model was one of its many shortcomings. Athearn seems to have figured this out on their most recent GP38-2W and GP40-2W/Ls
I can personally do without the lit step lights and ground lights; hopefully they can be turned off. I'm trying to remember if the CP GMD SD40-2 has lit number boards or not. Mine are all boxed up due to a recent move but I don't recall them being lit (but I may have just turned them all off).

I spent a good number of years gathering parts to build two of these from old Athearn blue box units. They're nice, but I don't know if they're THIS nice.
I have a feeling mine will be replaced by two of these. Bowser has really done a great job making the GMDD units so far, so I'd imagine these will be awesome models.

No doubt these will be excellent models, based on Bowser's track record. Now if they'd just do the Canadian SD40s!

I would like to think I'm a decent model builder but I'm enough of a realist to know I'm not going to beat factory quality, unless the manufacturer messes up. Given this is Bowser we are talking about there is a pretty low chance of that happening.

This is a nice (and unexpected) announcement. Hoping they haven't permanently mothballed their SD40 project.

Given this is Bowser we are talking about there is a pretty low chance of that happening. The first run GMD SD40-2s from Bowser have some dimensional problems with the grids on the side of the dynamic brake blister. I think most modellers (myself included) were so thankful to have a decent model with proper GMD details that they overlooked this issue. Bowser did correct the problem for subsequent runs.

You can definitely see it. The grilles on the dynamic are angled wrong and way too high. I have one from the initial run that I wish I didn't have now, since I bought the 5919(iirc) which is correct and paired up it's very obvious.

I must be mixed up which units came out in which run then, I was sure I had at least a couple first run units but maybe not. Mine don't seem to have the problem you describe.

So the first 2 versions that just say "Seargant Stripes", is the only difference the horn location?

So the first 2 versions that just say "Seargant Stripes", is the only difference the horn location? other than a few warning labels and such, pretty much. The one with the horn mounted on top of the bell is 'as delivered', the other one is how all the other units looked later on, with the horn moved to the rear and the air line running along the roof. I don't know exactly when that started to be done, probably in the late 80s to the 90s if I had to guess.

Not gonna lie, I'm sorta tempted by an as-delivered. What are the chances of one winding up near the BN (or SP?)

Not gonna lie, I'm sorta tempted by an as-delivered. What are the chances of one winding up near the BN (or SP?) BN, there is a chance one could wander down from Vancouver (BC, not Washington). SP, probably slim to none, at least back in the days when they were relatively new and still had the as delievered horn etc. After the IC merger in 99, it kind of became a free for all and CN units were showing up all over the place all of a sudden. It only takes one photo to prove the exception to the rule, but I can't recall seeing one.

I've never seen a photo of a CN SD40-2W on SP rails, certainly not at least before 1989.. Not to say it didn't happen, but so far nothing has turned up yet. That said, SP did test a set of wide-nosed CN GP40-2L/Ws in the late 1970s for a few weeks at most. That set did make it into Southern CA on the SP.

These are going to be good. The one at the bottom of the page with working strobe lights looks pretty cool. The number of lighting features is pretty impressive. Too bad I'm not a CN modeler. Those guys have been getting some good locomotives lately, with the SD60F and now the 40-2W.
The SD30Eco just got delivered at Lombard, so I expect reviews to start showing up online in the next few days. The state of that model should be a pretty good indicator of what's in store for the 40-2W.

not to revive an old thread, BUT:
I had a very nice conversation with Lee at the Supertrain show in Calgary, AB a couple weeks ago, and he told me something I found very surprising: orders have not been very good for these models, and as of now he doesn't have enough orders to actually produce them. I imagine the current economic situation has something to do with that, not as many people are putting pre orders on things when they are not sure what their situation will be in a year or two when the models come out. In any case, if anyone here wants these models and has not pre-ordered one,
Get your orders in!

Too much Canadian stuff lately- on all fronts.
I'd like to see more Mexican models, articles, etc.
