Canadian Pacific wood cabooses 437110, 437111 and 437134 were built in 1944 with a length of 24' 10" over strikers. Indeed, these caboose were a full 10' shorter than other wood vans being made in the 1940s. Business reason for the custom units was to maximize space on BC mountain switchbacks up to Warfield and were later used in Trail yard. All three of these unique vans were delivered in block lettering with 437110 and 437111 subsequently receiving the post-1962 CPR script lettering while 437134 was scrapped. CP 437110 additionally received plywood covering over sides/ends, upgraded steel steps, Ajax brake stands/wheels plus the 1968 brown "interim" scheme then later action yellow (with no multimark) scheme when last painted in 1979. My model reflects the final configuration of 437110 before its 1982 retirement and scrapping. Unfortunately, none of these cabooses were preserved in any museum or display site. I could find no websites currently hosting images of these prototypes that allow direct forum embeds, so there is no choice but to manually link to these photos:
This model will be built completely from Evergreen and Plastruct styrene sheets & strips plus parts from Kaslo, Tichy, Black Cat, Grandt Line, Intermountain, Cal Scale, Kadee, Moloco, Juneco and Plano. Paint and coatings by Rapido and Krylon, decals by Microscale, Highball and Black Cat. The April 1993 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman along with my book Canadian Pacific Caboose Colour Guide 1877-2017 both include more prototype photos and information on these vans.
I will update this thread with at least one photo per day starting now until the model is totally finished. Your questions are most welcome along the way so let's get started!
We've had a lot of hot weather this summer and I have been spending more time indoors than I would like for a number of reasons -- model railroading to the rescue once again! I had gathered all the needed materials and parts for 437110 in Sept-Oct 2021 but then lost interest. So after a 1.5 year hiatus, I am pleased to resurrect this project with this 1st photo showing my work area.

To my eye, that wine rack looks a little small for the upcoming task. Perhaps, however, the rack is only for short term storage.
You'll also need a glass--my wife says it always tastes better in a glass.
My compliments on the classic parts storage bin, over on the left!

Those are interesting cabooses. It should be a fun and rewarding project.
It would be nice to see more of that tank car ahead of the 437110 with its heavy weathering and high capacity solid bearing trucks.

First thing is to digest all of the data and come up with some rough measurements. Here is the start to the under frame but don't rely on these figures as many adjustments will soon be needed!

That's one little bitty caboose! I note that GN had 25' cabooses. It appears that that was the length over the body. I can't clearly read the same dimension off of the plan, but it appears to be 18' - 10".
This is going to be quite the cutey.
John Allen would have put it behind his Varney Dockside plus some MDC ore cars. I suspect.

^ Thanks for observing and commenting. Yes, the plans do indeed say 18' 10" over the body although that will need to be adjusted slightly. Yeah it will end up being a tiny model for sure, odd looking because everything besides overall length is the same as the 34' 10" version being otherwise made in the 1940s. At least with the little bobbers that preceeded these everything appeared scaled down.
I've only seen a handful of modellers tackle this oddity in various ways and unlikely we'll ever see it in RTR plastic, so might as well have a bit of fun here.

Except you're building one now, so a RTR one will be announced in September.

The underframe was cut from a piece of neat v-groove styrene. Lots of thinking and tinkering took place at this planning stage, measurements unconfirmed.

Still more messing around with measurements and ensuring everything lines up together. Lots of small compromises are necessary to succeed with this build.

Still more messing around with measurements and ensuring everything lines up together. Keeping up with parts - draft gear looks like Moloco as listed in your first posting. The wheelsets look like they will be intermountain from a package in one of the photos. That leaves couplers, bolsters, and trucks as of this posting.

Yes, those Moloco draft gear have turned out to a very good investment as they have enabled many projects like this by moving the mounting screw away from the thin, visible platform and inside the body instead. The bolsters and trucks are Tichy items and the couplers are Kadee 158 with trip pins removed.

OK good, now the draft gear, bolsters and center sill have been marked. Time to start incorporating the train air line using a piece of .020 floral wire.

Carefully file out a small piece of the center sill to accommodate the train line. Take your time and don't rush these first steps as the entire model will be built around these critical components. Proper alignment is key.

Boy, there isn't going to be much room under there. Are you concerned at all about truck clearances between the brake gear and steps?

Boy, there isn't going to be much room under there. Are you concerned at all about truck clearances between the brake gear and steps? Yes. That is the main reason for the slow pace of the build thus far -- lots of fitting and adjusting to make the unit square, correct and operable. More details coming this weekend!

Carefully test out all truck swing and wheel clearances before gluing anything in place. Measure twice, cut once.

The prototype must have had a lot of fun trying to fit in the AB brake system in such a small space. I took a lot of time to plan all of this out and had to compromise on a few items to fit it all in. Again test truck and coupler operation, then glue everything in place including end beams and grab irons once satisfied.

Thanks for the question. There is no room inside the model for details after adding 2 oz of needed weight. See my post of July 16 for the floorplan. No beds in these vans.
