Are there any right angle corner chisels in the last two sets? I'm closely inspecting the photos and don't see one. The sets seem to have all the shapes except the right angle. I did find some of those but they were huge, like 1" and such, nothing small for HO windows. Even google isn't helping, seems this isn't my day. Hi Manny, I like your work on the caboose - it's giving me some ideas too. Lee Valley Tools may have what you need, but they're not cheap: www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/punches/65380-square-hole-punches?item=50K5903

What a great post, thank you so much for this. The price isn't too bad considering you get several different sizes of chisel for the price plus a great free shipping deal over $50. Added to cart!
And good luck with whatever you take away from the caboose build, I am glad you were able to get some ideas from the thread.

I use a similar concept that only does round holes. Smallest is about 1/16" The specific set I use is long discontinued, but this one is about the same. rb.gy/66k3faI bought it during my paper modeling days, but I've used it on 0.020" styrene. I haven't tried thicker plastic. Like all/most leather punches it cuts a clean disk, but the hole is somewhat ragged. I use a round diamond file to ream the hole clean. I've used this classic leather punch for decades. Mine is Tandy for you old timers who remember the life of Tandy/RadioShack. I've used this on 0/040" styrene. Since it is made for leather work it should punch thicker stock. rb.gy/a07nq3EDIT I'll be darned. Tandy is still making leather work tools. Including the basic rotary leather punch. rb.gy/aw38xl

Etchings were installed as the window frames of both cupolas. The cupola for 436571 on the left has a sheet metal base for the Sinclair antenna and got its first shot of black paint. That will be masked once dry.

Detailing for 3445 cupola, circa 1906. Note these early railings are not the same as what most of us are used to seeing on later CP wood vans.

CPR 3445 sides are ready for paint after the addition of windows and drilling for side grab irons. Cupola has also been detailed and prepared for primer.

Circa-1972 plywood-sided 436571 is also ready for primer. Just two side windows at this date, cupola detailing pretty basic but does include radio antenna installation.

After the ends were glued to the sides as shown in prior photos, it was time to mount the body to the underframe. Glue used was Weldbond, which has a slow setup time meaning the clamps were essential here. Check squaring with the roof piece in background and allow everything to dry overnight.

Carefully release clamps after glue dry and you end up with a nice square assembly.

Let's head up to the roof, here are the tools and parts needed. The combo square is a new addition, thanks to Evan, Colin and Christian for the inspiration on that.

After curving the roofs on table edge it was time to carefully consider reinforcement, mounting and detailing. That's very hard .039 steel wire up top.

Running board supports attached w ACC and allowed to dry. I also nibbled out the cupola hole on 436571 but not on 3445.

Looks like its coming along nicely. So the thicker wire is for reinforcement?

^ Thanks Evan, yes, with the roof being only .010 there needs to be something to keep them straight. I tried styrene strips but found them too weak so wire seems to be the right material.

The steel wire works well to strengthen and straighten the roof pieces. Attach these w ACC and allow to dry. Ready for paint.

Piano wire or bass guitar wire? Or something else since those come in coils and are hard for me to straighten. I like the idea and am thinking of other projects that could benefit from a stiff wire.

^ Good question Christian, this is .039 Music Wire 36″ long K&S Engineering #497, comes straight in a long clear tube. Very hard to cut, use safety PPE when doing that.

I used piano wire many times in my real job and don't much like it. Lots of bleeding. But, I like how you've used it and can see future uses. K&S, of course. I never think of them. As for cutting it - that's simple. Use a triangle file to take a swipe where you want the cut. Then bend - it will easily break where the file marked it. I learned that from the Flying By Foy folks waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when they still used wire. Xuron makes a hard wire cutter which can cut (I just looked it up) to 0.040" That would work for your wire. I have one that I use to cut wire cable, but I've not tried it on piano wire. Amazon lists lots and lots of bass guitar string cutters for a third the price of the Zuron which I would choose if I had to do it now.

^ Wow that's great, thanks for all the tips and tool suggestions!
Yeah K&S has a lot of bargain-priced bits like this, even pieces of brass sheet, metal tubing and other oddball stuff. Styrene is usually my material of choice but sometimes metal is best.
