We're back at the woodies after spending the past couple of months focused on the streamliners. Time to start bending up the railings. And yes, I am happy to report the cupola windows are finally dry.

Colin was right in pointing out the Accurail storage boxes. They are a very useful product, well priced and available with fast and friction-less service. After tracking down a couple of boxes for the wood vans, write up and apply labels for easy shelf identification.

Getting ready to install the roofs. A partially crushed toilet paper roll is a quick and easy handle for hand painting the eaves and allowing to dry. The big red spot is a craft paint test, very close to CP red.

Took a bit of time to do some thinking and planning about how to attach the roofs. Also mark the roof end undersides for eaves mounting locations.

Trim boards will be needed for these vans but my commercial brand paint jar dried up. Sigh. So I just made up my own matched brew for smaller areas from craft paint. After 1st coat dries I will apply another coat.

Get the running boards ready so the paint has time to dry by installation time. Christian asked about my jigs earlier, this is another one made for mass truck paint jobs. It also has space for other parts to be added for painting at the same time. ACQ screws drilled into a handy plywood rectangle.

Folks reading these current caboose threads might not realize why the painting holders and jigs. Plus the importance of snowshoes for Canadian model painting.

Paint all the roof railings and allow to dry. I see from this photo there are a couple of minor railing issues, those have since been fixed as well.

Roofs installed with a fresh qty of Weldbond. Last batch must have been stale as this new stuff dries much faster and harder. Good product, readily available and not as runny as Canopy glue.

Start the end detailing by installing mud guards. In the 1950s, CP started applying metal grates on either side of all corner steps. Simulate these with Scale Scenics walkway tread and cut into triangles, eight per van as shown in foreground. CP 3445 gets a pass on these.

After the step safety grates have been installed and dried, carefully hand paint them with action yellow.

Those stepguards are strange to me. Certainly a key feature for the models.

Build the step supports out of small pieces of wire and attach w ACC. After they are dry, paint the same colour as the van for the pioneer era. Brake staff has also been installed and will be painted at the same time.

Build, install and allow all small metal railing details to dry. When done, hand paint them according to prototype photos from your era.
