The Rio Grande F7 #5761 was seen on the California Zephyr in that trains final years and even on the RGZ in it's first year of operation. That one looks like a keeper.

Their pdf for the trailers is bugged. The trailer and kenworth tractors are pretty much the only thing I'd maybe consider.

Hey Janek, very cool that you are doing more late era D&RGW F7's with the late modernized details! I have the #5764 offered 15 years ago. It and the newly announced #5761 were often paired in the late 60's during the last years of the California Zephyr, along with #5762 and 5763 which continued to soldier on with F9A 5771 on the Rio Grande Zephyr.
As an aside, I never did buy the other modernized F7's that came out with the 5764 (5711, 5712, and 5714 and 5713) but just recently found 5711 and 5712 as new/old stock and added them to my fleet. The late F7 era on the D&RGW was pretty cool.

Athearn left a comment on their FB page that the blank prices are so that dealers and hobby shops can print out the flyers and fill in their own prices. All of their flyers will be like this going forward. (unless there is a lot of complaints, I would bet)
To see the Athearn MSRPs you have to find the listing for the model on the website.

$30.42 for one 40' trailer with tooling cut in 1972. I get some of that is licensing the artwork, but I just bought a pair of undecs MIB in January for around $4, and if I was reselling they'd be $15

I always thought Athearn set the MSRP price and then vendors discounted to their price. Maybe Athearn wants vendors to print out flyers and mark their flyers.
Since there are other better trailers, I got rid of all but a few of the old 40' blue box trailers which are only correct for PFE if I recall.

ChessieFan1978, thanks for starting this thread! I've been so busy I forgot that Athearn would probably post its "April" announcements today.
The easy way to find Athearn's MSRPs is to click on VIEW ALL rather than VIEW PDF.
All but one of today's announcements are for HO products; just one is for N scale very modern UP cabooses and rider cars.
I'll comment on just a few of the announcements . The Athearn Roundhouse series 40 ft. grain [door] boxcars aren't much improved in detail from what I think were their "blue box" ancestors. I recall reading many years ago that the real cars those matched best were the Union Pacific's. This car type, with small doors in the main plug that probably facilitated loading and/or sampling the bulk cargo were a fairly short-lived successor to plain boxcars fitted with temporary grain doors. Increasing use of covered hoppers for bulk grain loading made them obsolete. The new announcement specifies that the white Soo Line car with red door is a "Legendary Livery", i.e. fictional. I question the plausibility of the others but would appreciate any corrections.
I think and hope the Athearn series PS-built boxcars have proper dimensions; I'm not sure whether any earlier runs had wire grab irons and etched metal end platforms. The ones I find tempting are the Lenawee County and Corinth and Counce cars, both classic Incentive Per Diem era cars lettered for fairly interesting short lines. Neither still exists. The former imitated the nearby Hillsboro County short line in taking over a few miles of former Class 1 track that Conrail didn't want to keep. For a while it used an Alco RS-1 that originally served the Washington Terminal line in DC.
Note that the Genesis series GN passenger F3 A and B units wear the "Empire Builder" colors of dark Pullman Green and Omaha Orange with imitation gold striping and lettering, but the road name on the A is in extended Roman capitals, not the font that is known by that name. Since the "era" shown is "1947+", they may have been in use before the lightweight streamliner sets were built. Again, I'd welcome more information on this.
The mostly "chocolate and orange" with yellow striping and lettering on the Illinois Central trailer matches that line's beautiful passenger livery, because the IC attached some flats with trailers or Flexi-Van containers to passenger trains. I already have a Flexi-Van container or trailer in the same paint scheme. I have a few IC passenger cars because of memorable trips in Illinois in 1967 and 1970. I've seen IC sleepers very far from there, too, e.g. Banff, in 1964. I think I've seen some Cornucopia trailers in the Northeastern US much more recently.
I believe riogrande is correct about the old "blue box" refrigerated trailers, at least.

I'm still not a big fan, if they want retailers to be able to set their own prices and just write them on the flyer that's fine, but why not just make a seperate flyer with blank spaces for the dealers and hobby shops and put the prices on the regular flyer for everyone else?

There’s nothing noted this month which leads me to believe that they are the older, wider tooling.

I believe riogrande is correct about the old "blue box" refrigerated trailers, at least. Maybe you meant "View All" rather than View PDF. I see the prices that way. I am interested in at least one of the D&RGW late era F7AB sets. Between the F7A 5761 and the 5764 I already have, that is a correct set of A units along with some SG equipped B units. Of course #5771 was also leading the California Zephyr along with other F7's that also lead, such as 555X series which has steam generator equipped B units and controls for them in the A units. From UtahRails.net: Of course F7B's 5772 and 5773 were wrecked and written off in the late 1960's. I did buy the F9AB set 5774, 5773 but am tempted to renumber 5774 to 5571, an F7 that was wreck rebuilt in the early 1950's using an F9 carbody. No one has offered any of the passenger D&RGW F units from the 555x series so far but they did lead the California Zephyr during the single stripe mid-late 60's era. As far as the 40' blue box trailers, the only photo's I've been able to find that matches them are 60's era PFE trailers. I have found no others to match, so the fast majority are foobies. I have a PFE decorated one just to have a correct version, and a few stand-ins but got rid of all the rest. Now most of my 40 footers are the former A-line Fruehauf or the Trainworx trailers with a few of the Walthers mixed in.

They were built 10/47, not for the Builder, 'cause there weren't enough. I'm guessing the International and/or the Red River. GN also got several ABA sets of passenger F's at the same time, likely for the Builder. They, too, were delivered with the "railroad roman" lettering. There was some discussion awhile ago about when the change from railroad roman to empire builder style lettering happened. Of course, there's the as-delivered dates, and the re-letter dates. My favorite NW-5 NEVER got the EB lettering. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the passenger F's got the new lettering in the early fifties, probably for the '51 Builder debut. Ed

Did Athearn ever retool the width on their PS 5344s? I know they had done some of their other too wide cars, but I don’t remember if the 5344 was one of them.

However you can improve the appearance and make them more generic by clipping off the wings over the front support and the curved portion of the rear bumper. A few minutes with flush cut pliers and some sandpaper. Given what trailers cost mine are going to stand in for a long time.
in researching my NW SD40 I did find a Maislin trailer that the Athearn could stand in for. Black with a white stripe so it would be different. Would have to find someone to do the decal though.

I am eagerly awaiting the Lenawee County boxcars. However, the artwork does not show the red star which indicated the location of Adrian. What is the best way to bring this to Athearn's attention?

A few minutes with flush cut pliers and some sandpaper. Given what trailers cost mine are going to stand in for a long time. Before there were better alternatives, I clipped the "wings" next to the landing gear off a couple of them, but in general, I prefer realistic trailers that match real trailers so I sold off all but a few of the Athearn blue box and now largely have the Fruehauf's and some Walthers Trailmobile and Trainworx. I bought most of the Fruehauf's when they were in 2-packs before they doubled in cost in singles.

macowiec, thanks for your post. I didn't notice the red star under the second white A in ADRIAN in the photo you posted until having seen it a little more conspicuously in another photo online. Both of those seem to show the cars' roofs as painted blue, unlike Athearn's rendering of a side view of its forthcoming model. I suggest you try getting in touch with Athearn directly. Your home town is one with a name that most residents of the USA would have a very hard time pronouncing. I know very little Polish but can say it fairly accurately. If the first c in the name or ID you use in this forum were a k, it would mean, among other things, a type of poppy seed pastry that I know better by its cognate in Hungarian, makos (with a "southwest to northeast" diagonal slash above the a). The Polish and Hungarian (Magyar) words for cabbage are also related, though the two languages belong to extremely different linguistic families. The European languages most closely related to Magyar are Finnish and Estonian, which are fairly close to each other but about as close to Magyar as English is to modern Greek. Food can bring different nationalities together.
Your website on railroads in southeastern Michigan looks fascinating. Do you know that much of the area including that and what's now northwestern Ohio, including Toledo, was vigorously disputed between those two states before the boundary between them was settled. Michigan and the US were very fortunate that the treaty that ended the war in which the USA won its independence from the United Kingdom did not simply extend the line of latitude that forms New York State's northeastern border with Quebec westward, as had been proposed. Had that happend, southwestern Ontario would be in the USA, but the mineral resources in what became Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northeastern Minnesota would have gone to Canada! Physical fighting in the 1840s between Canadian and US lumberjacks was resolved by a treaty between the US and UK because the maps the diplomasts on each side had from the negotiations in the 1780s supported the other side's contention of where the boundary between northern Maine and southeastern Quebec should be!
