Athearn New Announcements are up

I had all of those but have gotten rid most. I think I still have one or two. The D&RGW combo boxcar is only a stand-in.

But I forgot that Tangent has ALREADY done a 40' single owner box: the SP with the yellow stripe on the door. Nice cars, I got some!


The prototype for the model is UP class B-50-2 (as noted on the model photo above, on the brown car).

These were rebuilds done at Albina Shops in 1967-68. They appear to have been assigned to several number groups, starting with UP 113100, and ending somewhere around 117549 (kinda hard to say for sure).

BUT.

There were several thousand, and they went everywhere and hauled lotsa stuff besides grain. For awhile. There were a couple-three hundred in 1980 and TWO in 1985.

The last batch seem to have different door styles.

I'm quite sure none were ever done in the UP yellow cushioned load scheme, as they weren't. Cushioned.

Ed, many of these 40' rebuilt cars like the model were painted in yellow and wore the Automated Railway map with Cushioned Load. Last ones I saw were in MOW service in 2010. Photographed them in 1987, good condition, in storage. probably not long before their disposition.

None of the four former Details West cars represent any prototype.

These Details West box cars required some finesse with the coupler boxes and trucks. Although it has become much easier with the advent of the whisker type couplers and NMRA-recommended-hight trucks, it is still difficult if we are not used to them.

I am happy to see that 5 IPD box cars were listed here. However, ALM and UMP car are bland and unattractive. I definitely want LCRC/Lenawee County car. By the way, was AA/Ann Arbor really a small railroad that could benefit from IPD? It appears in "Incentive Per Diem Color Guide" by James Kinkaid, but I doubt it. The couplers have not been cushionized yet.


For the model assembled in 2001, the platforms at the bottom of the ends are not attached.

Ann Arbor was probably 6x the size of Lenawee County. And yes, at the time those cars were built, the Annie was still hauling a lot of overhead traffic via the ferries.
