Ed-- Oddly enough there are a handful of photos that do show air pumps mounted on the front pilot but STILL a big BL4 feedwater heater on the left side of the loco, and the space where the air pumps were is just blank--below the raised walkway. I'll post more info. later. From those books, I was only able to find 3548 in that condition, in 1944. It had an SA in 1947. VERY cool looking! Ed

Here's what I can find:
UP Prototype Locomotive Photos, Volume 8:
Page 7, right side view, UP 3536, May 29, 1944, still clearly matches BLI's Pre-1944 model configuration. No air pumps on pilot. No SA fwh in front of stack.
Page 8, right side view, same locomotive on June 25, 1950. Post-1944 configuration with SA fwh and pilot mounted air pumps.
Loco was vacated 2/21/1952 at Pocatello, Idaho.
Page 30, left side view, UP 3548, May 29, 1944, hybrid configuration. Air pumps on pilot deck of modernized pilot, but left side running boards match the pre-1944 configuration and the big BL4 fwh is still installed below the running board. This does not match a BLI model version. That is why I call it a hybrid version.
Page 31, left side view, UP 3548, May 31, 1947. Loco has been upgraded to full post-1944 version with the SA fwh. Vacated 11/16/1949 at Pocatello.
From the photos in Volumes 7 and 8, many of the Pre-1944 (BLI model) versions definitely were running in 1939, 1940 and 1941.
However, I found no other Pre-1944 versions in these books that were running in 1942, 1943 or 1944. Only the two road numbers cited above, and only one of them, the 3536, that correctly matches the BLI pre-1944 version completely. There could have been some others, because with only 3 or 4 photos of some locos, the war years were not well represented. Most 1941 photos of course were prior to US involvement in the war, and any photos at all during 1942 to 1944 would be rare as photographers were strongly discouraged from photographing railroads due to the war.

Guess you could say I'm all in on these now, as much as I can afford. Pre-ordered #3512 today, to go with the #3500 previously confirmed by distributor.
Letting a couple other locos go.
Keeping 3 BLI C&O K-2 2-8-2's as my main freight power. They are my best all-around steam locos to date.

I've talked to Broadway Limited about the oversized boiler jacket clamps along the ridgeline of the boiler. They said that while the computer rendering exaggerated the size of those parts, they were going to shrink the parts to a small size in production anyways, due to numerous complaints.

That is wonderful to hear! Based upon the other brass hybrids they have done, I have to trust they will make the needed changes. I would like the running boards to be a little thinner, and see-through, like on the Overland/Ajin model (the real ones were perforated).

I was able to find an Early American object, called a "book" by people in that field of study, and did some reading (black-on-white, not dark-theme). The book is Kratville and Ranks' "Motive Power of the Union Pacific". Well said. Usually I also go for those so called book objects And the one mentioned above is one of the best sources of UP steam information. I almost bought an Overland brass Bullmoose when BLI announced it. Now I just wait, and hope they not gonna screw it up, and there will be plenty nice detail everywhere, especially under the cab.

If the BLI model is good, the price on the Overland Models version will come down. If you wait you could have the best of both worlds and get a better price later. Some of the Overlands are at a high price point now. I think that will change.
