Couldn't have said it better myself. Where did Al Mayo say Yawn? He's been wanting this locomotive more than anybody. I don't see that comment on here. He must have deleted it. People at Athearn and I were talking about how excited he would be about the announcement. I know he doesn't like the handrails but at least now there is a more economical alternative to brass. I did decide to keep my brass ones because they do look amazing though.

Is the model truly doing to be "Genisisized" with all the detail parts on the frame etc... Will they finally do away with the bulbs?

Sounds like new long hoods are being tooled for the SD70 and SD75 models also. I'd take an improved SP when they come along.

A SD70M flare? YAWN and I don't care and it is a waste and the manufactures aren't listening to modelers. blah blah blah.
Said my negativity piece.
I'm happy for the modern modelers out there. I know some will find fault that Athearn is producing the model. Could their rush to get it announced mean that someone else is producing the model also?

If they are not offering the "UP Flag" on their first run I just don't get it. They should offer both Flag and non flag on the first run.

It was just a matter of time before they did them... I knew they had the requests. I knew they had looked into the costs of doing the early UP flared SD70M from the existing SD70M and were making the excuse that the conversion wouldn't be cheap... But when they started making announcements of new units that would cost a lot more to do (such as SDP45) there was a realization that the flared SD70M had to be back in play.
The surprise for me is that we get BOTH the early phase flared (UP) and the later phase 2 cab version (NS) announced at same time. So much for needing those delayed Katos now...
As for the Overland brass ones, I can agree that they look great. At one point I had 7 of them.

Good choice. Modern sells. These will do well. I will pick up a UP unit for run through power etc.

They have two UP schemes and two NS schemes... I wouldn't be surprised to to see the UP flags and NS "ghost" (as delivered) in future announcement.

Modern does sell, so that's good for the modern folks, and good so that Athearn can generate revenue to plow back into the tooling needed for that Southern Pacific SD40 I need to compliment my modest fleet of SP SD45's and tunnel motors!
Wallet is safe - got till around August to save up for those Genesis D&RGW GP40-2's!

There is a marketing reason that Kato didn't do a second run of AC4400CW's with "union Pacific " spelled out and they released the Building America scheme instead. More demand for the Building America scheme. Same held true for the CP version Golem Beaver vs the Dual Flag More demand for the Golem Beaver. Athearns Building America scheme was excellent on the last run of ES44AC's but I remember the first SD70's it was put on the flag just was terrible. If these turn out as nicely as the ES44AC did, which I'm pretty sure they will, I will finally get my UP manifest trains going.

Heritage ACes, black SD70ACes, GP38-2s, GP50s, GP49s, GP40-2s, and now new SD70Ms and upgraded SD70s! Athearn is really spoiling us NS modelers. I may also get a UP SD70M. I'm so glad they did the standard Union Pacific scheme, as I really do not like the flag scheme.

...this will definitely put a dent in my wallet, I'm going to want at least two or three UP ones and if they do them in SP then at least two of those. How long have we waited for these to be announced anyway? Now we just need that Genesis quality SD40-2 to finally be announced...
cheers,

James I believe he has the Overland flared version like others in our forum so the Athearn model is not something he is waiting on?? If they detail the model like a Genesis model and improve the features, it should be nice. Larry

I'm pleased to see the flag free ones first...

Al has mentioned he is waiting on the flared radiator but prefers it from Kato or MTH because of LEDs and handrail issues.

Not liking for the loco. But the UP SD70M's sign me up for all in all road numbers. Does anyone know if they speed match well with Katos? I would think with Tsunamis they should fit in quite nicely. I have Athearns ES44AC's and Kato AC4400CW's and they mu very nicely without a lot of speed matching.

FYI to BigBoy and all... The regular SD70Ms that Athearn did previously in the flagged UP scheme (4526-4528) were the initial 3 flag units, and the flag was changed before the later UP units. Don't think that those models are incorrect because the flag is different as the flag is different on the real ones and Athearn's model is correct.
