FYI to BigBoy and all... The regular SD70Ms that Athearn did previously in the flagged UP scheme (4526-4528) were the initial 3 flag units, and the flag was changed before the later UP units. Don't think that those models are incorrect because the flag is different as the flag is different on the real ones and Athearn's model is correct. My apologies to Athearn. I never knew this. Curt thanks for pointing this out.

So... Does anyone know if the first UP units released in August will be flag units or just the plain ones with Union Pacific spelled out on the side? I see Athearn put up only a picture of the non flag units but I'm wondering if there are more variants that will release all at the same time. Anyone at the train show should ask them. At the time I asked they didn't know yet.

The 4526 came by Roseville a week ago and I noted it as being one of the first units with the first edition flag. You can see the difference. All of the flared units have the later edition type flag. :Larry

Not really a UP or NS fan, so I'll probably skip these. BUT, one of the comments on Facebook says that I should be able to get the PTC antenna separately, so I'll be able to update my CNW heritage ACe.

UP Flared/Flagged/Phase 2 cab = 121 3971-3973 (3) 4837-4849 (13) 5127-5231 (105)
UP Flared/Flagged/Phase 1 cab = 550 3779-3970 (190) 4735-4836 (102) 4869-5126 (258)
So by far the most common UP flared SD70M is the regular (phase 1) cab with flagged scheme... So you can bet that Athearn will follow with that most common scheme.

James, I'm betting no flags this first announcement... It would help the sales of the regular "wing" scheme by not having the flagged available too. Let the NS and pre-flag UP pull sales this initial run. As I mentioned a few days ago, let the new unit make sales in the first run and the most popular paint scheme drive the sales in the following run(s). They are probably going to wait and drain your wallet for the holidays... UPDATE... I WAS INCORRECT! 3 flagged units announced this run!

Couldn't have said it better myself. Where did Al Mayo say Yawn? He's been wanting this locomotive more than anybody. I don't see that comment on here. He must have deleted it. People at Athearn and I were talking about how excited he would be about the announcement. I know he doesn't like the handrails but at least now there is a more economical alternative to brass. I did decide to keep my brass ones because they do look amazing though. It was in the other thread - he was "yawning" about additional GP38 and GP40 variations. He spoke so eloquently of his disinterest, that I just had to use it here.

I hope that the roof comes off like the ACes, it'd make it a lot simpler to put in LEDs.

looking closely at the tooling for the cab windows they improved from the version earlier. I don't remember the corners of the windshield windows as rounded as they appear now of course I never had any since probably the first run of UP's. I really like that they are truly updating this to the detail level that they have with other models. I don't like the ACE's but the SD70M's I've always been a fan of.

These work for me. SD70M flare, SD70M, an SD70I--I might get a few of each. I'll have to see how different the retooled non-flare SD70M is to see if it is worth ditching my current engines for the new ones though.

I will surely get my share of these SD70M Flared/Phase II versions since those are the ones I truly like. So sadly I will admit that I will purchase 2 or 3 of one of my favorite locomotives ever. I am not sound obsessed either so I will be planning on getting the Non Sound units (MSRP $199) and adding the PERFECT TCS A4X decoder and Keep Alive capacitor in it the same time I will upgrade the engines to Monster LED upgrade kits. My biggest concern now is the damn handrails since I have the LEDs all worked out fine.
I shot good video of the Locomotive and will take pictures tomorrow on Sunday. I was surprisingly SWAMPED at my Display stand all day long and was not even able to walk around and buy anything! I did not make it to Mallory or Stroh at all. I shot just 5 planned videos. I have much catch up work to do tomorrow. I am EXHAUSTED today. Truly Exhausted. I am ready to sleep now at 9:30pm! Peace out!

Well, only two railroads have those and even those are very different... On both it isn't just the radiator section that would have to be changed as the rear brake-wheel placement changed too. I'd like to see a CSX 4700 series SD70MAC in plastic (if only to tick off the guy doing custom plastic ones for $700) but I'm still betting against it happening anytime soon.

Relax James... There's only 4 UP numbers there - but 3 with flags! (8 stock numbers for UP due to sound and no-sound versions each)
The 4 UP numbers announced are all from the same order - all built at London and delivered in early 2002 (Jan-March 2002)
The 4 NS numbers announced are all from the same order too - all built at London and delivered in mid 2003 (April-June 2003) (Note NS 2591 in white face scheme as delivered*, others in white-brow scheme circa 2004 on)
* Review of online photos of NS 2591 show that it was delivered in the white face scheme (with white extending down to top of unit nose) but in 2004 was changed to be white brow scheme (white only down to top of front windows). But by 2006 that paint was starting to peel and by 2008 the unit was appearing closer to the original white face scheme on front.
PS. Feeling sharp pain in wallet area too...
