Your tankcars are awesome Bobby! Here are some cars I completed this last week! Athearn 2970CF ACF Covered Hopper, painted with Scalecoat II MofW Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals. Branchline Models 50' RBL, painted with Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow and Boxcar Red, lettered with Champ Decals. Although the cars belonged to FGE, they had PRR reporting marks due to Union Rules regarding car repairs. Intermountain Railway Cylindrical Covered Hopper Kit, painted with Scalecoat II MofW Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J

Great start to SPF, guys! Scotty, That's a beautiful Electra! I've always liked it's clean lines. What kit is that? I could use something like that. Meanwhile, there's been some nightflying going on, because the stars and moon suddenly appeared. Makes it easier to navigate at night, too. Meanwhile, crews have been adding more light to the Night Scene. An overview of Durango shows off many of new lights. Using the "Rice Lights" I discussed in a thread in the DCC/Electronics forum: linkI added docks light to the grocery wholesaler, icing platforms, and freight house. The ASARCO smelter complex really cam alive with some lighting. The furnaces glow red and will starting pulsating when fired as soon as my Ngineering lighting modules arrive.

Great looking night opps Mike. That's a DC-3 is it not? This Electra is not a model it is more of a toy per say. I pick it up on Ebay about four years ago. I thought it a bit unique. Enough about airplanes. Here is my train pic for this week. It is a current on going project.

Scotty, It's a DC-6. Primary spotting differentiation is that a DC-3 has two engines. I'll keep my eyes open for that Lockheed.
That a really nicely done boxcar. I've been experimenting with weathering, so hope to have more pics of that soon here in SPF.

James, Careful there, hanging out at night can be habit-forming. It does bring to mind something which you may already be doing in your reviews. I've only sampled a few, so don't know. However, commentary about the lighting performance at night is something I think people will find useful. Proto does theirs pretty well, while Athearn doesn't see much to gain from lighted numberboards, for instance. Atlas does a workmanlike effort on their lighting that falls somewhere in between, depending on the specific model. One thing I'm looking to improve is getting a good beam out of headlights. I've replaced many (most?) of my Athearn bulbs with LEDs. Now, the Athearn lighting never drilled nails in the night to begin with, so things don't get worse. But some of my installs really shine in terms of putting out a beam, while others are, sadly, a whole like like the Athearn factory looks, which is kinda disappointed, other than gaining the increased reliability of LEDs. I think my main problem is boresighting the LED in the headlight housing. If it's off-center it tends to turn to mush`even when you're getting a well-lit appearance.

I'm kind of a lighting guy myself. This may come as a shock since my layout is not well lit, but I don't fill like hanging anything or messing with the ceiling in that part of the basement since I move so often. I have covered lighting in a few reviews but mostly passenger cars and the shine through that occurs on some car sides. I have also desired good headlights for my locomotives but I don't have the time or the talent to replace the bulbs with something that produces a more focused beam.

Oh, I know the don't mark the walls thing well being an Air Force brat I know what you mean about light leaks, it messes up a good thing when that happens. Not to worry about experimenting. I was just musing on some things I plan to work on with my own installs now that I'm deep into the night... Any positive results will be posted.

It's not base housing, I could do what I want to the place but I am about to move this year sometime. I knew the move was coming so no need to install all of that stuff. I also probably won't install lighting in the new place because by the time I leave that house and rent it out to someone they might not want to rent the home with non trendy lighting hanging in the finished basement.

Completed MDC Shay.Mostly made of junked components that others gave up on.Sagami can motor with a home made mounting bracket. NWSL refits and Echo mountain pickups............direct wireing from trucks to TCS M series decoder. Calscale/Cary details. Eyelets instaled below frame to hold wires. Many hours put into perfecting drive and run before body work..............whats the point of a nice looking model if it does not run. Anyways after countless hours of fun and frustration here it is on the rails. To me priceless!HA! Steve

Steve, Love your Shay! Great work [placeholder for missing thumbs up smilie]
I started one of those years ago, having bought a kit when they were first released by MDC. Got diverted and never really committed to getting back to it. Got the Oso [?} tuning book along the way. Sold both book and kit+parts off for about what I had in them a couple of years back. So I admire your fortitude in coming up with a beautiful running Shay.
