Finally the ACF 5250 announcement. HOLLY COW $72.95 each!? Looking at the pictures, I don't think the level of detail matches that price.

Ouch! I have some stuff over there for quotes, that I haven't seen yet. I hope this is specific to this car...

Maybe I don't need a 5250 after all.

I'd like some WC ones down the road. Wasn't looking to spend 60 bucks per car, though.

Probably the Chinese factory is charging a boatload more for these. Like Ryan, I may not need a 5250 after all. Tangent and Moloco are better models than Atlas and cost less, so it is hard to understand.

VERY happy to finally see the S4 updated!!
That hopper though, nope. Not for that price! Molded grabs, poor looking wire grabs (bends are very soft looking..).

Beyond the price issue, why do the ARCO Polymers car in a re-mark in the first run, and not the original KCIX car? This is like the WP double door boxcars with the replacement (and off-color) panel doors, when the "original" (matching doors) has never been produced?

Those NDYX cars are actually not remarks, they were painted that way, though not as common as the KCIX cars. Series is NDYX 19 - 94, built in 1970. Geez! I about fell out of my chair with the 5250 prices, I'll pass on those!
Looking at the pictures, they did try to take the detail up a little. The etched walkway appears to be free standing, the wire piping and metal knuckle couplers are upgrades. For the money it should a level above a Scaletrains 5188, but there is no comparison. The Scaletrains 5188 blows the 5250 away at a much lower price!

Well, hopefully another company will step in. We all have gotten used to ever increasing prices but as the British say, Atlas is taking the Micky. Even Blaine could beat Atlas in price and detail.

Even Blaine could beat Atlas in price and detail. "Even"? You might want to re-write that sentence. Ed

How about Arrowhead and Tangent could beat Atlas in price and detail?

Yeah, the EL wheel report collection has a small handful of NDYX cars going back and forth between chemical companies in NJ and Arco Polymers in Kobuta, PA, via the P&LE connection in Youngstown, OH. I also see a small number of the HPCX - Hercules cars as well. Kinda pricey, though...

I never saw anything but KCIX at their Carson, CA refinery back in the day. I wonder if the NDYX was a different lessor, assigned to a different refinery, didn't last into the late-70s/early 80s, or used for a slightly different product?

Street price on those hoppers will be closer to $50. Still high, to be sure, but not as bad as list.
The Trainman coal gons I nabbed a handful of when they turned up a couple weeks ago have sold pretty easily, while the second round of auto racks I can't sell even at just a tad over break even prices. That tells me while people want modern stuff they don't necessarily want to pay top dollar for it and don't care if it's 100% correct. I don't think the coal gons are right for CSX or NS.
I will probably pre-order the Trainman bulkhead flat cars, I have a BN guy and TTX should be an easy sell.

BTW, I found the article I remembered from my collection of Rail Model Journal on the 5250 covered hoppers. Article starts on Page 35. magazine.trainlife.com/rmj_1994_11/Lots of info there for those of us who might spring for one or two fo the Atlas models, maybe.

Not sure but I think they were ARCO into the early 80s, when ARCO got out of the plastics business. I have a shot of a car from the same series, repainted plain jane gray in 1984.

The 2nd round of Atlas auto racks came out after the Scale Trains ones.

A Scale Trains Rivet Counter rack with metal panels is $75. The Atlas rack with plastic panels sells for $70-85.

Am I correct that the original Athearn Blue Box Centerflow was a 5250? Thanks. Yes, the article from Rail Model Journal was written to discuss the available models at the time, including Athearns covered hopper and the prototypes related to it. There is a lot of good info. The article starts out as follows:
|
|

Post by upcsx on Nov 5, 2020 14:39:33 GMT -8
I have some AHM four bays that look just like the Athearns are the AHM's 5250's.

AHM DID make the high-brakewheel version of the 5250. The Athearn is the low-brakewheel version of the 5250.
There's a picture of the AHM car showing the high brakewheel at HOseeker in the 1973 AHM catalog.
I suppose it is possible that AHM also did low-brakewheel versions at some point. But for most of us, those would be pointless reproductions of an easily found Athearn car.
