Here's my first finished Rapido F30-D alongside my not yet started yellow one. The Trainworks dropframe trailer got a bit of airbrush and a color wash with some MIG track rust thinned out. Finished painting, decaling and weathering the F68 CH/DH cars as well, while I much prefer TTX Red, these were delivered in yellow. Scale Trains did not get these correct so both were stripped and completely redone, a PITA but worth it as these are really nice models. The big chore now is to come up with two equally nice loads for these cars. Happy New Year guys! Mark Hills

Good afternoon from cloudy, cold and snowy Northeast Ohio! First up is a Tangent 86' High Cube Boxcar, painted with a 50/50 mixture of Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Reefer Yellow along with Silver Paint then lettered with Herald King Decals. The Annie acquired the 12 Green Bay & Western cars, three Greenvilles and 9 Thralls, this is the Greenville car and thanks to a post on the MFCL I found out it was equipped with a HydraCushion Underframe and I built the Tangent kit accordingly (they had both the Keystone and HydraCushion parts in the kit). Car was used from the Dearborn Stamping Plant mainly to the Final Assembly Plant in Minneapolis and traveled via Car Ferry over Lake Michigan. Also finished up an Intermountain NSC 4550CF Covered Hopper kit, and substituted a Plano metal roofwalk for the plastic one in the kit. Car was painted with a 75% to 25% mixture of Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow and Boxcar Red and lettered with Herald King Decals. Cars were acquired by the Canadian Wheat Board as the railroads would no longer supply new cars due to the Crows Nest Pass areement where car rates were frozen at early 20th Century rates which precluded the railroads being able to finance new replacement cars. Many thousands of cars were built and were apportioned to the CP and CN for maintenance. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

I picked up this factory painted Atlas U30C shell a few years ago for cheap, so I mated it to a U30C drive I had already. If it weren't for the cab windows all being lined up across the top and the funky proportion of the roof center part to the angled parts the story would end there. I decided to replace the cab but I didn't have one with the square headlight housing already printed. I did have one that matched a later order with rounded headlight housing and reinforced doors, but that meant I'd have to add an anticlimber to the front pilot. Fortunately one of those was in my parts box. Here are the cabs together. You can see not only the difference in the window sizes but also the location using the paint separation line as a guide. After spending a little time looking at this model I've decided to add the visors under the headlight openings, which wasn't really a practical detail to have when I was printing these cabs through Shapeways. I also tweaked the shape of the headlight housing, which in this iteration is a few thousandths too wide. Now that those changes are made to the CAD files I'm already looking forward to the next batch of GE models on my roster to fix!

Good stuff guys. Love the repainted flats and the Annie 86er.
Ryan, that cab is splendid. It also reinforces my qualm with the U25B cab, as I look at your hinges..

Ryan, Do you remember who was 3d printing the Remote control antenna boxes for the BN U30c’s? Had it saved somewhere, and now I’ve lost the info. Nice cab by the way John

I have 4 railgons. All of them need the topcord (top chord? top cord?) extended to make them look more prototypical. This is the first car to get that treatment.

After two weeks of back-to-back train shows I really didn’t feel like working on much. I managed to stick these together over the no-man’s-land period between Christmas and New Years: Both loads (Walther’s and Kirbi) were picked up at these shows. One of the kirbi ones was short parts, so only 5 spools. The “raw” metal was some duplicolor “cast coat iron” and rustoleum khaki for the wood. I picked up this factory painted Atlas U30C shell a few years ago for cheap, so I mated it to a U30C drive I had already. I may end up doing these to my U30Cs

Curious what paint you used to match it up? I may end up doing these to my U30Cs I started with a few drops of Model Master Willow Green, then added a few drops of Testors Beret Green, then went back and forth mixing those two colors until I stopped hating it. It's not perfect but it's not bad either. Weathering will seal the deal when I finish the detailing (and hide the ugly oversized 5 in 58 that I used to change it from 5348 to 5358).

I kinda want to do one of the ones with an anticlimber; and actually grabbed one with DCC for a decent deal at one of the shows. I’m guessing the DW part provides the anticlimber?

It is a Hi-Tech part. I leave the front handrails on and cut the part to fit the stanchions. I did the same on my C30-7s.

Well a day late but it started snowing here this morning so I took the time to finish some decals. First is NS GP59 4608 which was a EMD demo unit with rounded cab and nose. The Cab and nose are original Fr8kar Shapeways printed parts as is th eDynamic hatch. Next is some color to add to my loco roster. I had an extra Kato chassis and found this CNW shell for cheap. Added the handrails, number boards and numbers along with the ACI panel, MU hoses and plow. Did some light adjustment on the bottom photo. Ryan, those new cabs look great. This GP59 cab sat almost 2 years before I started this project. I am going to try a U30C with the new B23-7 cab first but I do have one of the old ones that came when the GP59 cab did.

That looks really good, James! I've been thinking about adding one of those NS ex-demo units to my roster, too.

Got some Progress on an airslide. Athearn Genesis 2600 cu ft airslide with a mix of Kohlberg and K4 decals, Tangent 70 ton trucks. Prototype was assigned to the service pool for the big King Midas flour mill in Superior, WI so it would be a likely sight on the CB&Q mainline from St. Paul to Chicago. It's shown here passing the bluffs in East Dubuque, IL, 1969. Tim VanMersbergen

When EMD built the GP59 and GP60 demo units they added some aerodynamic styling to the cab face and nose. The dynamic brake housing was also rounded as compared to the later built GP59/60 production. Fox Valley did the dynamic brake on some of the early SP/SSW GP60's they produced, no one else has tried it. Fr8kar designed the rounded cab and nose along with the dynamic section, which BTW has to be shortened for a GP59. Take a look at some prototype photos of EMD 8, 9 & 10 for GP59(NS 4606 to 4608) and the GP 60 should be 5, 6 & 7 with the same styling. NS was the only road to purchase the GP59.
Also the cab has a V front like the ALCO C424/5. The demos were the only ones to receive the cab and the GP60 demos went to CSX later. As I stated the rounded dynamic brake section appeared on some SP/SSW(Cotton Belt) GP60's. The details of the cab, nose and Dynamics show well in the EMD demo paint.
Athearn had the chance to hit a home run with the GP59 but redid it with painted GP60's in the Roundhouse line, they are all foobies. The GP59 is the same length as the GP60 but has 2 less prime mover doors. So everything from the cab to the radiator compartment is moved back, hence more space between the cab and the blower duct.
