I looked on the Train Order Site and behind the Black Box is a Box Car and a Canadian caboose.

I looked on the Train Order Site and behind the Black Box is a Box Car and a Canadian caboose. George LOL, that makes sense. It didn't look like the track in which you would spot a locomotive on. And, there is no reason for a RDC to be spotted there either (unless it had some sort of mechanical break-down). Unfortunately, there goes my guess - a RS10/11/18 series.

...not sure how it could be an FP7, Jason said in his newsletter 6 different body styles, are we talking minor detail differences or actual changes to the body styling? ...so I'm curious just what locomotive did actually have 6 differing body styles?

E units for one, but there is no way Rapido would be doing E1's, E5's etc. RDC's had a variety of different body styles.

Jason, In case you're taking notes and keeping count, put me down also in the "Would buy a Krauss-Maffei..." camp, Rio Grande-flavor, please. Well, that's 3. Only 2000 more to go... I'd buy two so that leaves only 1999 to go... Bill McBride

Everyone seems to be overlooking the most obvious, right under your nose thing: the SD35... I can think of three versions right off the top of my head, high nose, low nose, cab headlight, nose headlight, SDP35, and it has the chicken wire covers.

”It has six completely different body styles plus even more nose and other detail variations…” Does the SD-35 have more than six nose variations? Are we talking just the metal that makes up the car body or all the bits and pieces that can be added to it (bell, brake hardware, lights. etc.)?
The RDC has a variety of body styles from the standard coach to the -2, -3, -4, and all the variations and modifications railroads made to suit their own needs. However, I can’t say that it has more than six different nose variations.
The “F” and "E" units do have a lot of variations, but where would you find that “chicken” wire grill?

The coaling tower is more likely than the SD35...
RDC versions: RDC-1 RDC-2 RDC-3 RDC-3.1 (without RPO) RDC-4 RDC-5/9

RDC versions: RDC-1 RDC-2 RDC-3 RDC-3.1 (without RPO) RDC-4 RDC-5/9 You left out the early and late headlight style changes (that many Canadian RR's had), so that potentially doubles all those versions to more than the 6 Rapido mentioned. I fink the later ones had those smaller square windows too. If it were to be an RDC, doncha think it would be the RDC to end all RDC's?

JD, Jason said "6 completely different body styles"... Headlight (and window) variations wouldn't be included in that, but would be the detail variations he spoke of...
And an accurate RDC in all variations would outsell yet another SD35 probably by a factor of 50-100...

Here is another RDC Variation: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1172456I recall seeing a couple of these in Amtrak Phase 1 in Washington Terminal. If I recall correctly, they were of a lower profile than a standard RDC. Other RDC variations include the B&O RDC2 Daylight Speedliner Buffet Coach, and the Reading RDC3 Cafe Coach. My guess is a locomotive common on both sides of the border, as opposed to another rarity.

RDCs were VERY common on both sides of the border (plus Australia)...
(By the way, that isn't a "variation" but a modified one from one of the earlier predominant versions)
The RDCs STARTED with 6 major body variations, with many more detail variations, and had many modifications after that... The tooling to do the model would start with that of the 6 original bodies, but then all the detail and modification variations on top of that. So I can see why Jason spoke of the reaction of their contract builder to a very complex model to be done.

The "Roger Williams" trainset RDC's (called "Hot Rods" by NH crews) were not merely modified from earlier versions. They are unique, having very little in common with any other RDC (and both A's and one B still exist). Perhaps the roof fluting and the exhaust dome are the same, but just about everything else is different. They are 6" lower, they have more powerful engines (50 Hp more per engine), they have outside swing hanger trucks, they had 3rd rail gear and traction motors making them electric/diesel-hydraulics, the side fluting is a totally different design than an RDC, the number of windows is different (and their location), the A-units have a full cab at one end, and the B-units are cab-less. But not like the RDC-9's, where they simply didn't cut the windows in the end of an RDC-1. The cab-less ends of the B-units and the A-units have conventional squared off Budd passenger car ends (but with vertical fluting).
I've tried to get Walthers to make the "Roger", as they'd only need to tool up two shells and a new truck, but the rep. said they'd let Con-Cor do it.

And an accurate RDC in all variations would outsell yet another SD35 probably by a factor of 50-100... Don't forget, the rooftop ends on the body did vary from one version to the other, so just sticking a new light on top won't cut it. All new tooling for each early and later would prolly be required. And it's kinda hard to do smaller windows as add-on parts to seamlessly fit into larger window frames, therefore that may have to be done with new, different tooling too. But, it may turn out to be a superdetailed FP7, so all this could be moot.

LOL... From Atlas's pet troll to Donnell's pet troll...
The SD40-2 isn't in the photo Jason posted though... That's a NW SD35 or can't you tell the difference?
FP7A doesn't have all the body variations so it has to be the RDC...
Also, in case you never noticed, Jason has this thing, let's call it a fond affection, for VIA equipment, and he is too smart to go up against both Athearn - especially Genesis line - and Intermountian on a unit...

I absolutely do not see the attraction of the RDC's.
Then again, I'm not a big fan of passenger equipment and prefer the "industrial" side of railroading.
I'm also one of those weird guys that likes the modern locomotives with their angular shapes and pure utilitarianism.
While I'm still hoping someone will make a genesis quality sd40-2, I will anxiously await any Rapido product especially after seeing some of the detail on their recent efforts.

I'm not a troll... There are several on this forum who have met me and can attest to that... (unlike the real trolls who just type nonsense here and nobody else has met)
I'm just pointing out the real long lasting troll like John Sheridan has been... He's a good guy too... Not a troll. More of a troll identifier like me.
JD, the Rapido FL9 is a few months out... That's the only F unit you should count on from Rapido. Sorry. They have business sense.

RDC's can have their attractions, such as being able to run a one car passenger train. You can operate them on almost any layout and have passenger service. I've had them before, and they didn't exactly excite me. Maybe, if an RDC is what Jason is doing, I may change my mind. Then again, maybe not.
