Do they still have class lights? How about a center-to-center measurement, and a measurement of how high they are above the walkway? Yes, and radii of the top and side corners of the nose! I can try to get this as well...have to figure the best way to measure. Framing square held over nose radius with photos, like Plano did with the GP hood radius perhaps.

Framing square held over nose radius with photos, like Plano did with the GP hood radius perhaps. That'll work if the two planes meet at 90 degrees. If not, and you have a friend along, you can put a straightedge on each plane, and then get the radius. If you bring two framing squares, you're pretty covered. And that friend, of course. Ed

I finally ponied up for CSX 5851 and 5912 with DCC and sound. Probably the most expensive plastic diesel models I've sprung for, but both were photographed in the area and timeframe that I model, and I actually photographed 5851 myself in 2003, one of only two B36-7s that I caught before they were retired: drolsen.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=37704The top of the nose does look off to me, but these are definitely the best-looking GE "boats" that I've seen in model form. I've only just started to delve into the whole sound thing too, so these will be really interesting to check out. Dave Olsen

Concerning Santa Fe paying the bills, we MILW guys had to put up with FP45's with dynamics for decades. heh

Sorry...that WAS funny!
Folks, I'm sympathetic to both views. I am unafraid to roll my own, but hate doing the rolling to improve a model (fixing these stepwells) and prefer to save it for something I can't buy (turning my GP40P-2 into a GP40P).

Do they still have class lights? How about a center-to-center measurement, and a measurement of how high they are above the walkway? They are still in YN2 paint and have the class lights blanked with circular plates. I can try to measure center to center of the plates as well as height above walkway. In regards to class lights, just looking through the proto pictures posted in this thread it looks like there wasn't much of a a template used. Looks like they were "eyeballed" to close enough. The most consistent placement seem to be on the Santa Fe units, but every other pic appear to show a range in placement. thebessemerkid's post on page 7 are good examples, with LN 1513 the most easy to see, the rest are more subtle.

Of course it could always be that those particular blanking plates were just slapped on and not centered over the holes, lol. As for the radii, given that nothing on the GE nose is really a plumb surface other than maybe the side sheets, if even that much, your work will probably go quicker if take a large angle gauge, transfer to paper, and mark where the Tangent points are. You near Waycross? Is that the deadline you speak of?

The Downfall meme for this fiasco would only make sense with "Hitler" messing with CSX modelers and reacting to the criticism.

The deadline is for the Pennsylvania Northeastern RR in Buckingham, PA. Units 5843 and 5834. The two B36s were (are) sandwiched between an ex-CR C39-8 and a New Hope C30-7.

Cool. Hard to believe it’s been a decade already since CSX purged them. If the New Hope C30-7 is the one I’m thinking of, that’s a former CSX jobber too.

"Hitler learns the new Rapido B36-7 won't have the right stepwells for CSX" Even Hitler ranting in that clip would be more rational than some of the discussion here. A model company goes out of their way to 3D scan a locomotive and its nose, and some think even that's been intentionally made wrong. Sounds like the stepwell thing has made a few people more than paranoid, who might do well to differentiate between a company making the decision to not tool up some variations (resulting in an "inaccurate" offering by way of using the wrong components) versus a company 3D scanning a model, and for whatever reason, intentionally changing the nose profile of something to make it different or inaccurate. But I'm sure that's all fanboy nonsense, right. But hey, here's an exercise for the ruler-wielding GE keeners out there: measure ALL the different model manufacturer's B-boat and C-boat nose profiles (Atlas, Intermountain, Rapido, BLI, Athearn, etc) including those that weren't 3D scanned, and see whose noses come closest to the measurements of the prototype nose.

You are correct about the NHIR C30-7...former CSX 7087 (ex-SBD, exx- L&N). Shame, really, her paint looks practically fresh. Trophy hunters have robbed the number boards as well. Not sure what the critical failure was on any of them, but it is a very unique deadline. The C39-8 is being actively cannibalized to keep her sister running out of Lansdale.

I never read anything that said it was intentional. Rapido made a claim and they didn't deliver. If the were not going to model a CSX varient, they should have stated that in their advertising.

There’s a cool little video over on YouTube of the 7087 pulling the excursion, long-hood-forward no less, back when it was running. I’m not from the area, and was unfamiliar with the operation, but I could quickly tell the heritage of the 7087 without even looking it up...how, you ask? That “insignificant little taper” on the stepwells, of course. The same ones that some believe are a molehill being made into Mount Everest. Spotting features are important.

Why don’t you just get “Rapido is perfect” tattooed on your forehead and get it over with? That's genius!!! I'll put it right in line after I get my giant "TRIGGERING THE CSX B36 FANBOIS" tattoo on my rumpcheeks! Oh BTW, did you know they got the SP UDE light on the RS11's too large??? Yes, really!!! And I'm surprised nobody caught this one BIG inaccuracy on ALL of the Rapido products....their couplers are just TOO LARGE and OVERSIZED!!!!! How could they miss this big glaring inaccuracy, did they not 3D-scan the couplers too???! The insanity of it all. The sheer lunacy Rapido thinks they can get away with at our expense.

Let's see if I get this right:
We now have several pages of complaints, ahem statements, of Rapido's nose now being allegedly "incorrectly" contoured, yet I fail to see any measurements of prototype or model to actually prove that, and you all are opining based upon photos of now well-used, dented, beat up originals, that could even have been repaired or otherwise altered since new?
Bloody brilliant, I say!!!
And still what reads as continual whining about a little tiny 1 mm x 2 mm stepwell variation, as someone clearly stated above?
Such calm and reasoned, rational discussion. Sure, right.
Jack
P.S. I don't have a dog in this fight. I really don't care about GE's or southeastern railroads.
