John, you should change your forum handle to the "King of E's"!!!!! Dave No. More like, E-Man and the Master of The E-Unit-verse. A little play on the mid 80's cartoon, He-Man And The Masters Of the Universe.

Haha.
Truth is, I still learn something new about E units with every build.

The pilot of the Rock Island E8's flair slightly at each end at a sharp angle. Very hard to replicate.

Looks like Rock Island hit the immovable object with the left front of pilot. This pushed the step and edge of the pilot outward.

I'd like to add that pilots on the car body units, snow plows on hood units seem very prone to damage from hitting objects.
Rock Island and Milwaukee Road E's and F's were so poorly maintained at the end of their railroad lives that damage was not repaired unless a step or something got torn off the unit. Dents, scraps, rust, leaks, etc. were just left without being repaired. When the time came that the poor old unit died, it was pushed to the dead line where it awaited the scrappers torch.

It is finished, but onequiknova Jr. decided not to take his nap this afternoon. Photo shoot postponed until after his bed time.

A few more. I have struggled in the past to try to model chipping paint by painting the chips onto the top coat. It turns out actually chipping the top coat is the way to go. It was done with AK Interactive's chipping fluid. It's similar to the hairspray technique, but you have much more control.

John, that is truly one impressive model. The detail is incredible. It has to be the nicest model posted on this forum ever. The King of the E units. Bill

John,
The model work and the weathering has all come together to produce a GREAT looking model. Very nice job on this one. I am very happy you got the hang of the chipping effects. Looks great. I have found out that although it works with TP paint, the best results come from a true acrylic paint. You can really get a fine chip when using acrylics.
So what is next?

The ak interactive products are great. I want to start using them more on my models.

Beautiful model, I really like your work on the underframe, the depth and detail give the model a lot weight. Thank you for sharing your build and the impressive results - it's very inspirational.

Finally finished. Again, I can't get this camera to take a picture that accurately represents the true colors of this engine. I've tried custom white balances, different lights, flash, nothing works. It really shouldn't be this difficult. Natural light would help, but it's below zero outside, so that's out. You'll just have to picture the red less orange and more vibrant. Well besides being 500% nicer than I could ever dream of doing, your photos are not that bad. Muted in lighting, yes. But the muted lighting actually makes the weathering stand out more and allows more detail to be seen. So don't get too much worry in your head. It's artwork. A Mona Lisa of an E-Unit. Should change your forum ID to Rembrandt, for you are a master.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with the way it turned out.
Brian, as far as what's next, I've got a few half finished projects sitting here. A GP35, U33B and a GP9. I should probably at least finish one of them. I've got a bunch more E's to build as well.

You've truly set a new standard for E-units. With your talent and weathering skills, I'd love to see you tackle a vintage Penn Central E8. Thanks for sharing, inspiring work.

Here's a few more taken in the overcast sunlight shining through my kitchen window. They look a little better. So how do like them Plano grilles? They are a WHOLE lot better than the junk BLI passes out with these models now.

The new Plano grilles are excellent. Anykne building a BLI E8 needs to pick up a set. Not sure what I would have done without them.

The new Plano grilles are excellent. Anykne building a BLI E8 needs to pick up a set. Not sure what I would have done without them. When you open up the area behind the grilles, coupled with the nice grilles it really makes a statement. The Material Service red very nicely highlights the area behind the grilles. On my BN and CNW, since both are dark colors, the detail is more or less lost behind the grilles.

True. I over exaggerated the weathering and washes behind the grilles to help everything stand out once the grilles were applied. You could give a dark color a similar treatment by using lighter colors for weathering and washes.

What would be the color of paint used for "Chicago Red" paint scheme? I know Tru Color has both the CRIP Maroon and Red but is this Red the same color or is it the later red used for the Red/Yellow Commuter E units? Thanks for the info...Don
