Don't worry. Just keep going. Many are enjoying the progress reports. I know I am.

^ Thanks for your likes and comments. I somehow feel I'm "invading" the forum with these modelling posts as there seems to be a lot of other discussions happening lately. I'm certainly not trying to compete with those posts. But it seems as though you and a few people are enjoying the posts in this thread, so I'll continue unless I'm getting on people's nerves with this. Anyway, this is an Intermountain Murphy roof from their 1937 AAR 40' boxcar. They are a critical piece for these CP cabooses but are sadly no longer available since IM recently stopped selling these types of parts. No invasion at all! You have your own thread so past away as much as you want, IMHO! One can only hope that IM will reverse that policy seeing as how much ill will it's bringing them from the serious modellers.

Please continue! You literally wrote the book on these vans and the faster you make progress, the faster the Kaslo kit will come out! (I'd love to build one from scratch but realistically that's a big stretch right now)

Wow, thank you to each and every one of you who responded with comments and likes. Yes, I did write that caboose book which has been a very handy reference to this project. Alright, I will keep on posting. With the hot weather, bugs, stay-cation tourists (I live in a resort area) and COVID restrictions I am finding a lot of time and inspiration to hide from the world outside. What better activity than to start a kitbash and make use of all this wonderful styrene and other products. Yeah I agree about the regrettable IM decision not to make parts as kitbashing and model building is only possible with parts! But we live in a hobby that seems to be most interested in selling us $400 DCC engines and $100-200 freight cars. I love those things as much as the next guy but what can you do when your desired prototype is not available? Rather than to spend my time posting here bugging mfrs to make what I want, I decided to do it myself and drag you guys along for the ride LOL. OK enough ranting, here's another photo! Onan diesel generator, lowered fuel panel, details added and window openings cut. Doors installed & numerous railings built and installed on end pieces, this was tedious. Three (3) vents and smoke jack installed on roof.

Most of that crap I skip right over especially when it goes on and on and on. This modeling stuff is what I like to see. 1632 viewings as I'm writing shows that there's interest in model building. Other folks have different interests and my interests are, to many folks, crap. It's a big hobby. Post away.

Styrene bracing added to chassis in preparation for shell mounting. Lead weights will be cut and added before installing the body components. There will obviously be no detailed interior except possibly for a couple of seats in the cupola.

I'm really enjoying this thread. If there was a "thread of the month" award this one would get my vote.
Looking forward to your next update.

Hopefully Intermountain gets enough requests from modellers for their parts to make them re-consider. Squeaky wheels...

Add me to the list of folks enjoying the heck out of this!
I'm always interested in how someone tackles a particular model- Give me hope that us mere mortals can do the same!

2000 views and some really nice comments and support. It seems this thread is a hit. Wow guys, thanks. Roof spray painted Krylon flat black, way faster and easier than fighting with airbrush and the results are excellent. If you follow the directions this paint produces a very nice, smooth, thin finish.

Krylon matte #1311 is my go to for finishing.
Great modeling going on here.

^ Thank you, quite a compliment coming from you as I'm familiar with your work.
Agreed about Krylon 1311 -- I used it on some other parts last night and this morning I've got a nice, thin even finish. See the review and test thread I posted for flat finishes last year in the Crew Lounge.

My modeling is mostly in CAD. I don't have the patience, or time, to build something from a pile of Plastruct/Evergreen. If the parts don't fit right I adjust on the computer and print some more. heh
Only issue I've had with Krylon 1311 matte is making sure I shake a new can long enough. Messed up some trucks with some that I hadn't mixed long enough. Fortunately it hasn't happened on a completed model yet.

Gloss Cote tested on piece of styrene, no issues revealed, so body shell pieces were sprayed gloss in preparation for Micromark rivet decals.

Micromark rivet decals added, this took 3 hours! Everything here will end up in Action Yellow. Now ready for primer.

I'm so glad you're documenting everything. It's fun to follow along. Great work all the way through! Thank you everyone for your encouraging likes, comments and questions since this thread was started. I have obviously been very busy and been short on time to acknowledge every one individually. Rest assured that everything is highly appreciated and it has motivated me to complete this project in record time. Ryan, I am happy you are enjoying this thread format. In the past I used to simply post images of the finished product to save everyone from reading all the gory details. But at the time you asked me for in-progress photos, despite having shown the finished product. I was surprised by the request but can see this format is much more engaging with those who care to comment and question. So it seems your desire to see progress photos was very much on point -- good call!

I find progress photos to often be more interesting overall than the final product. Not to take away from a great model, but I get into the nuts and bolts along with seeing various techniques.
Keep it up Manny.

What he said! There are model builders here. You see them pop out every Sunday. But there isn't any reason to pop out on any other day. Progress threads are the heart of most non-railroad modeling groups. Works in progress was an early and continuing step in the prototype modeling movement that has changed the hobby bottom to top. Important things on a model are often best seen raw.

Primer added; details and rivets not obscured as long as you spray far enough away to just apply a light coat.

Thank you to all for your continued comments and likes, still very much appreciated. Here's the next photo in the series: Got the airbrush working! This was a long time coming but I'm pleased with the results. I still prefer to use spray cans outside if possible but for certain applications the airbrush is a must. The paint is a fairly fresh jar of Rapido Action yellow with a bit of thinner added. This one model consumed about half the bottle of paint.

Is anyone inspired enough to follow along with a similar caboose build of their own or is this just a spectator sport at this point lol?
