"...miserable...humorless geeks...kind of sad."
Yeah. Who let THEM in the door?

Well it's very easy to have a sense of humor until you get burned more than once.

I don't even think there's that much involved in making those videos, either, they probably edit it up themselves like all the guys on youtube.

I get a kick out of the owner's manuals...but I usually don't have/take the time to watch the videos, just like I don't watch the Tuesday videos of Athearn' announcements. Seeing the list of announcements and/or the .pdfs is usually enough for me.

There seems to be quite a few humorless geeks in the hobby (which is supposed to be fun)! There is plenty to criticize Rapido about, but this isn't one of those things. I can only imagine how miserable one must be to not get a chuckle out of their videos! This hobby is different things to different people. It doesn't mean we're not having fun. I used to watch Rapido videos but they're all the same and get tedious after a while. I'm with Tom Murray. Spend the time on developing better products instead of wasting time on frivilous videos. I'm not having fun paying the Rapido guys to have fun.

The biggest problem with Rapido IMHO is that they don't make factory samples. They make pilot models which are then hand decorated -- these pilot models may even be hand assembled by Rapido members and not the factory, not sure. Then any adjustments to the tooling are made, and then they go straight into production. The factory *never* makes a decorated test version of the product. All other manufacturers do this. Heck the computer software industry wouldn't work at all if we went straight from what we call unit tests to production.

Too bad Rapido's competitors had their Chinese factories shut down exactly as Rapido was entering the market.
A real shame and an amazing coincidence.

Rapido posted a photo of a D&H unit on Facebook. It **appears** the brake cylinders are still crooked. Hard to tell though. Otherwise paint looks great.

Interesting. I do wonder at the yellow stripe being placed in front of the engine hatch. In this photo, that area appears to be blue, with the yellow stripe not there at all: The prototype photo can be opened up hugely--I love it! Ed

Unless I'm mis-identifying the engine hatch, I think the yellow there's a thinner blue stripe between the yellow stripe in front of it and the silver-painted area, in both the photo of the full-sized loco and the one of the model. If I'm wrong, please me know.
And yes, I really like the photo made at the former station at Whitehall, New York, I'm guessing from the road bridge north of it.
Sunday, August 7, about 10:50 a.m., EDT:
Having taken another look at the enlargement of the undated photo Ed Sutorik posted, the one made by Mark LLanuza, also at Whitehall but in 1976, and the recent posting by Doug (pa4), I'm reasonably certain that Doug's comment is correct. I wasn't able to open the link to another photo that NS4122 posted and NYSW3614 commented on.
For what it's worth, the Life-Like Photo 2000 D&H PA's have the yellow and blue stripes straight across their roofs just ahead of the engine hatch and lack the thin yellow stripe at the bottom of the sides and at least the front end. Almost surely those models were based on the PA's as the D&H originally painted them for use before Amtrak was created and before they were rebuilt for the Adirondack. For reasons of personal finances and family tranquility I'm keeping those models rather than ordering any of Rapido's truly excellent models.

If Bowser had done the PA-1: Higher quality, lower price, civilized marketing.

Correct Joshua, the original PA-1's like the 17 in your photo had the yellow stripe carried across the roof. On the rebuilt PA-4's, the yellow stripe does not cross the roof. I've never seen the roof of all 4 PA's before and after rebuilding, but this seems to be the pattern. Rapido's model is a PA-1 so it's correct.

Maybe. The newest announced RS3s (84 variations of the PRR hammerhead) had a $50 price increase, to $249.99 and $349.99.

I noticed the price differences at Trainworld, where there is still quite a few units in stock. Prices for DCC sound units range from $220 to $300.
But if you want a WM unit with sound, $220 seems like a good deal.

Maybe. So we got a poor rendition in a hurry. Yay.
Sample: Compare the grab irons on the RS-3 to the PA-1. "N scale detail at O scale prices".

Oh yeah, you don't believe in photos...
I have a Bowser SP&S unit right next to me. It looks exactly like the ones in photos that are all over teh web.
So it's the the Rapido photos that can't be trusted. Maybe Rapido is victim of Russian photoshoppers?

84 variations on the hammerhead or 84 versions of the RS3? 84 variations of the one PRR unit. I'm being a little sarcastic. They had one, the announcement as I posted in another thread covers every paint scheme from delivery to patched for Conrail (4 PRR variants, 2 LV, 1 CR). (when they do the RS3m they can do three more versions, too).

They missed one. 8445 with the paint scheme Bowser lists first with no trainphone.

because it got the plain keystone scheme first, then later the antenna came off.

Always thought it was weird it got the next scheme with large numbers and the trainphone went back on. because it got the plain keystone scheme first, then later the antenna came off.
