Wow, the definitive SD40-2 is finally coming to market! Many have tried and failed to meet the highest standards but I'll wager ScaleTrains will get it right!
This is pretty exciting news for many and it should be a good "bread and butter" diesel and because it was so long-lived, it should be popular with modelers of a fairly wide range time frame. IMO, it's a wise choice despite there being a number of other makes of SD40-2's out, that model of EMD diesel may be considered by many as the F unit of the 2nd generation diesels.

First impressions from viewing their introductions and looking at it on their web site.
Great looking model. Crisp tooling, nice stance. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 9. Definitely a worthy model of the SD40-2. Great looking traction motor blower duct on the trucks and great job on the sanding lines.
I find two things that sadden me.
1. Gross mold parting line on the nose. 2. No EMD builder marks on the truck side frames like what Athearns have.
Those two items are fairly trivial. Number 1 can be easily fixed if you paint your own models. Number 2 is not an easy fix, but most likely overlooked by everyone else but myself. I like those kind of minuscule details.
Questions I have for Scaletrains.
1. Will these models be offered as undecorated later on? Say a SUPER Undec. A box that has ALL the parts to build ANY version. 2. Are the trucks at the correct spacing? 3. Is the frame scale width? 4. Will you be offering the cabs and cab interiors as purchasable items?
I wish Scaletrains GREAT success on this model. I am on the fence if I should replace my fleet with these. The deciding factor will most likely be if they are offered as undecorated models. Would be nice to make that small addition to the side frames with the builder markings. Just saying :-).

Awesome news!
Brian, the product description on their website says "Dimensionally accurate truck centers." Hopefully the mold lines on the nose will get cleaned up. I also really like to see the EMD logo on the sideframes. I haven't seen anything about how far along they are with development. Maybe that's something they can still add. I think a Rivet Counter SD40-2 should definitely include that detail.

Nicely done. Although I already have a bunch of SD40-2s from Athearn, one or two more from ScaleTrains can't hurt!

Thanks for the heads up on the correct truck centers. That is great. Brian

Offer a super undecorated kit and I'm in. My Kato models will be relegated to a dusty shelf.

Are there pictures of the actual model posted online? Not seeing actual photos of the model on the site.

NM. I didn't realize the pic of the NS Admiral Cab version was a MODEL. VERY impressive looking model. Ken J Johnson deserves some kudos for the scene and photography also. I am VERY happy I didn't give in to a moment of weakness and buy an Intermountain SD40-2.

Paul answered my question on the Scaletrains Facebook page. The EMD logo and production marks WILL be on the side frames for the production run models. WOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!
That moves them to a 9.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Fix those mold parting lines and we have a WINNER. 10's all across the board.
Now all they have to do is offer the undecorated version I need or a super undec and I am in for 10!

Not to be a Negative Nelly, but has anyone seen a locomotive from Scale Trains actually run? A new drivetrain and selection of a quality motor are not trivial matters.

Looks like it's becoming much more common for manufacturers to provide the research proving they've done their homework to ensure the models they're selling are accurate for a given era.
That's something we didn't get much of...borderline unheard of even 6-8 years ago.

Finally!!! One of the most common locomotives ever found on rails and there has never been a definitive model of it - until now! We now have definitive versions of both the EMD and GMD SD40-2's. Bowser did every variation of the GMD version and I'm sure Scale Trains is going to cover all the variations of the EMD version. Shane did say this project will carry on for the next ten years. Although I am in the midst of downsizing and seriously curtailing my model railroad purchases these will definitely have a place in my much smaller collection as they've always been my favorite locomotive. Put me down for at least two of the UP and BN versions. ...and that sound I hear? ...could it be the number of SD40-2's from everybody else suddenly going on fire sale prices? I foresee a large number of SD40-2s showing up at swap meets in the not so distant future.

And I just said to the wife yesterday “I think I’m done buying trains for a while.” Well, so much for that plan. (Where is that "Shut up and take my money" cartoon?)
Thank you ScaleTrains!

A all new SD40-2 has my attention since DCC/Sound is under $200.00..While I already have 2 NW HH SD40-2 by Athearn I still plan on looking these units over.

Why so cheap. $139.99 for no noise and 199.99 for noise. Could they be counting on modular tooling for other lokies. They are making it pretty hard for Athearn at $134.95 to sell theirs and forget intermountain.

Whoa!!!! Scale Trains faked just about everybody out of their socks. That intro with the NS rep was great misdirection. An accurate model with sound for $100 + change is $100 less than the current market. I've seen the pre-production model of the turbine and they are outstanding. If the SD40-2 are as good as the turbines they will rock the market. I'm not a big fan of the SD40-2 but at this price point, I can quickly become a fan.

I have 8 Original Kato SD40-2's that I have been working on. 4 of them painted up in L&N grey and yellow and decaled. 1 stripped and 1 undec ready for paint. 2 still needing to stripped and repainted. With this announcement for the ultimate 40-2, should I keep these engines or get rid of them like Brian Banna suggests. Decisions,Decisions.
