New on the model railroading scene is Homeshops. Good friend Chris Palmieri has teamed up with Tangent to do custom runs of freelance railroads. It seems that we have had our own fictional railroads and enjoy reading about others as well. Gee, I wish I had a TG&N car to run on my layout. Well why not?! But Chris decided to go one better. We are all familiar with Accurail cars but he decided to go with a higher end car. He contacted other freelancers and got the green light from Tangent. His first run will be the PS 4750 in 7 freelance railroads, four numbers for each car. He’s also got other cars and other freelance railroads in the pipeline. He was recently on the Modelers Life podcast ep. 174 to explain his concept. He can be found on Facebook and on the web at Homeshops.net. Homeshops.net. homeshops.net/

I’m sorry to be negative, but……….I’ll take “Things nobody asked for and is a waste of production time and resources” for $600, Alex.

I never heard of any of these railroads. I certainly don't see spending $50/car for them.

I think it's just fine.
They either sell, or they don't.
I won't be buying any. But then I won't be buying any CSX CW-48BW's either. Others will. Or won't.

Some people, especially those who run a freelance, would definitely take a liking to these. There's a big group on Facebook dedicated to freelance model railroad stuff, so there's probably some interest, at least enough to allow this to happen.

I wouldn’t even be bothered to comment if it was anybody other than Tangent doing these. Having the premier manufacturer, with a near-flawless record of prototypical freight car models, dedicating resources to commemorate some random people’s crackpot ideas of alternate reality games in US railroad history is NOT progress, IMO. Especially when there’s 35-40 real world schemes yet to be done on the Tangent 4750. Not to mention the few due for a re-run.

Lighten up, rounder. Tangent isn't dedicating their resources to research and produce these models. Tangent is producing custom painted models for a customer who ordered them to their own specifications and meeting a sizable minimum quantity to do so. That's what Tangent is in the business of doing: selling models to their customers. Got a problem with it? Simple solution. Don't buy it.
On the flip side, if Tangent offers a model you, your club or a similar group of modelers want in a large enough quantity now you know it's possible to arrange for such a custom order.
Full disclosure: Chris is a friend and I'm a proto-freelancer in a former life. These models look amazing in person, just as you'd expect from Tangent.

Right, no need for me to add two cents as a customer if it happens to not align with your opinion. I’ve bought enough Tangent cars over the years to fill a Home Depot HDX 55 gal. tote, and still have all of them, so my input should be worth at least that much to those concerned. I’ll lighten up if you get bent.

I wouldn’t even be bothered to comment if it was anybody other than Tangent doing these. I appreciate Ryan's comments, as well as others of the be and let be ilk. Normally I would join those comments. BUT, seeing a Tangent box with a factory foobie - that puts things in a different place in my mind. Tangent has put a lot of effort into positioning the company as the premiere builder of prototype models. If the models are coming in a Homeshops box I have no issues and wish them well.

No, you've got it all wrong. It's not in a Tangent box. It's in a nice, green, Arrowhead box.

Tangent most definitely is dedicating already limited factory production resources and production time to fill these orders in a globally constricted production and shipping schedule. The only plus side for me is if it helps to fund capital for Tangent to produce a model I would actually want. Guess others can get their fantasy fix and if the idea crashes and burns we likely won’t see it again.

Not my personal cup of tea, but good for them. If they can get a decent amount of preorders to make it viable, there's no reason not to. No different than club cars and the like being produced. 'cash talks, bullshit walks' Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com

Clubs raise money sometimes by having runs made of cars decorated for the club railroad. I don't see a problem with it. Maybe Tangent can put some of the profits from this into developing other models, like an X65 boxcar, or whatever it is you happen to wish they'd make.

On the plus side we might see another run of real prototype PS 4750s from Tangent in January 2022 to compliment/consolidate the production of these cars.

I've ordered an Arkansas Valley car and 4 of the other road names. I enjoy a well done freelance car.

I ordered one of each car. As to the hate being spewed in the direction of the freelance cars; Remember that the success of projects like this help Tangent to produce more freight cars that are in prototype schemes, which, I will also buy. In my opinion if somebody wants to shell out that kind of dough for Tangent to produce freelance cars and give Tangent some unanticipated extra dough, I am all for it.

Good for anyone making some money. I will add I don't necessarily think Tangent needs any help making money, but hey, at least this didn't include them having to do their own research and artwork. So that's a win.

Are these "roadnames" various freelance layouts that people have built, or just names they dreamed up on the spot?
I've seen on Ebay where Utah Belt and Virginian & Ohio stuff sells for big bucks. The cynic in me has considered selling off surplus equipment but first slapping a quick coat of paint and V&O decals on it (decals which are also available on Ebay). I could probably fund my retirement with it.

Tangent has recently had some slower sales on some cars some of the coal cars, the X58s and the new 40' boxcars then last months release was parts for said boxcars, not saying anything is going a little bad for some of their releases but just maybe they have to diversify a bit.

If anyone reads this forum, they should have seen plenty of photos of Copper State cars. That's Brian Banna's homeroad.
Manufacturers used to release cars for Virginian & Ohio and other freelanced or proto-freelanced roads. I didn't read complaints back then in the letters to the editors. Why care now?

The Arkansas Valley (and I believe the Kansas Pacific) have also been in SPF'S here.

I like it!!!! When I was asked to design the first of these cars, I was very happy to help. I designed three runs of artwork. Two in the light blue scheme and one in gray. I love proto-freelancing if it is done in a prototype fashion to emulate prototype operations or to fit a realistic history. I like giving it life by writing the history and then bringing it alive with models. Although, there are foobs I like as well. One of my favorite decorations on a car is AHM's Naugatuck Plastics. There are a few others as well all foobs, but they look cool and they look like they belong. Every one of us no matter how RPM extreme you are accepts foobness to some extent. Some a lot less than others, but foobness none the less. Foobness reins supreme in this hobby. They are all out of my era, so I cannot use them. But as one who designed one of the cars, I will be getting the four CSR cars and those of us that are the owners of the road name will have our names written in stone since each of our names is on the car as the leasing agent/ organization in the text at the upper left corner of the car.

These cars look great, I may pick up a WF&N or two. Nothing wrong with a well done proto-freelance model, such as these, or the Allagash gondolas they've done in the past.

I’d order one, as I love the humor of mixing those in, but unfortunately I don’t think any of them made it to the Pacific Northwest…

I run some of my club cars on my home layout. I'd rather run one of these than a foobie where the MP don't have.
Part of the joy for me as a model railroader is, well, having a little fun with it. I'm ok with a cool-looking protolanced car/

Here's a link to Chris Palmieri's 'proto-freelanced' railroad. Very nice work as I see it. www.meridianspeedway.net/Back in the day, there used to be an active little market in trading freelanced models and decals. It was fun and I exchanged more than a few. Good for this new venture and Tangent.
