The nose couture does look a bit steep, hopefully that is some kind of lens effect from the camera. The pilot may or may not be right depending on the unit they're going for. It kind of looks like a cross between the MK rebuilt BN units and the PRR modified ones. I'll also point out that the jacking pad looks like its at least twice the size it should be. On the positive side however the trucks do look really good. I wonder if they will have the option to mix and match journal boxes?

Neither image in rapido "flyer" is level. This leads to the nose angle appearing off to some. In the case of the image in yellow, it's done in such away as to make the locomotive appear longer and it also in my opinion enhances the slope of the nose.
If they actually used some kind of scanner on a real one -- which someone eluded to way above -- it's hard to imagine it not being correct unless they didn't something wrong in that process.

To make a good comparison both photos have to be taken at the same elevation, which is hard to find.
There was an article in Trains magazine some years back that claimed that because EMD used a lot of bondo to finish the complex curves of the nose, that no two bulldog noses ever had the same contour.
This is actually where Alco had a manufacturing advantage. With the PA nose, much of it could be fabricated by simply curving a steel sheet around the front of the nose. Then the top of the nose had a relatively mild curve. So the PA nose was easier to fabricate, faster, and cheaper to make than the EMD bulldog nose.
(I'm not getting into loco performance/turbocharger failures/244 engine failures, etc.)

I would think during the era that E and F units were built any filler was lead based, not bondo. They used lead on the cars up into the 1970s.
As for the Rapido models, I would expect in about nine days those with the ability will be able to go see them in person at Springfield.

I don't think that the slope would vary very much. The internal framing members would be made to standard dimensions.

Regarding EMD's E nose building procedures: These images were posted the last time we discussed the F unit nose construction. I think it is reasonable to assume that the same or a similar construction process was used for the E unit nose. The process was probably improved upon by the time the E8s were built, but I doubt that EMD spent the money on a completely new assembly fixture (see image 4 below) for an E nose which is basically an F nose attached to a longer car body. Of course, I could be wrong. Thanks, Mark

In regard to my previous post about the Farr grilles: I received a very cordial email response about the grilles from Bill Schneider of Rapido. He noted that the photos are of a hand-assembled pre-production sample, built by someone at the factory overseas. He noted that on this sample, the grilles were bent by hand, and thus came out "wonky" and are not how the production model will be done. Here is how he described the grills on the production models: " The grills on the E-8 follow the design that we have used on our various F-units in the past. They are bent into a U-channel which gives them longitudinal strength and keeps them from warping or popping loose. Because they are bent metal, there will always be a slight rounding to the edge when viewed in extreme close-up, but in production they use a jig which provides a sharper bend than you get by hand-bending them". He included a couple of photos of their previous FL9 models which show how the grill will look on the production E8 models. They indeed look much better and simulate the prototype well. I can't attach the photo here, but I have included a link to a photo of their FL9 from Walther's page, which shows how the grilles should look on the production E8. Rapido HO FL9 at WalthersBased on this, I think the production E8 models will have good representations of the Farr grilles. I still am of the opinion that the nose contours in the photo of the sample are likely distorted due to distortion from the camera/angle, and that the pilot still looks very much like the 5 ex-UP C&NW units I've studied photos of. I expect that since they laser-scanned the prototype, the contours will be pretty accurate. One more photo which shows this type of pilot: C&NW 508 (ex-UP 934)Mark

Nope, Rapido has reportedly canceled and will NOT be at the show. As for the Rapido models, I would expect in about nine days those with the ability will be able to go see them in person at Springfield.

To my slightly discerning eyes the FL-9 looks to have a nice rendition of the nose slope, so it would be worth asking Rapido what the angles are on both, that way we would have an immediate answer.

Thanks, Mark These drawings remind me of a rather spirited "discussion" on the Legacy Atlas forum involving Spikre and others involving a contention that the windshield area consisted of cast pieces. Actually going to the patent 2,530,762 documents and sifting thru them it does mention using sheet metal.Interesting to me in reading the paperwork that one of the inventors was a Mr. Blomberg.
